Still think robots can’t do your job? This video may change your mind

Still think robots can’t do your job? This video may change your mind | Education et TICE | Scoop.it

It’s hard to grasp the scale of the robot revolution that is slowly eating away at the human workforce. A new video by CGP Grey, a Youtube user who makes short explanatory videos, helps put things in perspective.

+

The 15-minute video, “Humans Need Not Apply,” focuses on jobs once thought to be the exclusive domain of humans. Rapidly improving software and robotics technology—the creation of what Grey calls “mechanical minds”—are starting to do white-collar jobs once the preserve of desk jockeys. “Just as mechanical muscles made human labor less in demand, so are mechanical minds making human brain labor less in demand,” Grey explains.

+

Grey’s concise analysis sweeps across job sectors, covering the the threat to lawyers, doctors, traders, drivers, journalists, and even musicians. As Quartz explored in aninteractive feature earlier this year, few jobs are completely safe from this trend toward automation.

This movie was included in CDs demonstrating Apple's vision of technology Integration into education in 1995. Notice the idea of a tablet with video conferencing capabilities. Does the promise for education still hold true today?

The desktop computers in the movie look like 5260 or 5500 model that put parts of the movie in 1996 or 1997.

The two teachers sharing a file demonstrates the early idea of airdrop.

What College Can't Do (with some good cartoons)

What College Can't Do (with some good cartoons) | Education et TICE | Scoop.it

Better to go to a state school, where the student body is more socioeconomically diverse, or to a “second-tier” liberal-arts college, where “real educational values” persist, than to submit yourself or your child to the careerist “machine” of élite higher education. This is a slightly fantastical way of looking at college—is there really any reason to think that students at Reed are more intellectually curious than students at Columbia?—and its real-life applicability is hard to gauge. But Deresiewicz’s article resonated because it echoed broader cultural concerns about busyness and overwork. It’s now widely accepted that adult Americans as a whole act pretty much the way Deresiewicz thinks Ivy League kids act. Americans work too much, think too much about work, and cultivate an air of competent yet maniacal busyness.

Know or die: risk and opportunity of Knowledge 2.0
“And the web stormed the enterprise and disrupted roles, tasks and jobs: it cast speed, openness, flexibility and efficiency throughout, sparing no business processes: manufacturing, logistic, accounting, customer relation management, lead generation…”
The digital mutation is also profoundly disrupting how knowledge is acquired, organized and shared. Knowledge is an intangible, yet strategic asset of any enterprise. With businesses becoming more virtual and dematerialized, its value is patently and rapidly growing. Continue reading →
