10 Techy Icebreakers for The 21st Century Teacher

10 Techy Icebreakers for The 21st Century Teacher | Education en général | Scoop.it

by Med Kharbach

"Icebreakers are " discussion questions or activities used to help participants relax and ease into a group meeting or learning situation" (Dover, 2004). Icebreakers are very important in the learning-teaching process that takes place within the classroom. They can help in creating and maintaining a healthy and successful learning environment for students and are also the best warm-ups to get students engaged in a learning task."

Hi Amadeu For me they are similar but different. EtherPads are useful to use for quick collaborative work and the ease of not having to get students to register etc is a real bonus (I've had nightmares with Google products, especially with international groups or while traveling abroad). I get student to use them like 'scrap paper' and then afterwards they can shift their text for final publishing. I also REALLY like the time slider as you can see how the students constructed the text.

Computer Learner Corpora: Analysing Interlanguage Errors in Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication

Computer Learner Corpora: Analysing Interlanguage Errors in Synchronous and Asynchronous Communication | Education en général | Scoop.it

The synchronous and asynchronous communication analysed was part of the MiLC Corpus, a multilingual learner corpus of texts written by language learners from different language backgrounds. The main research questions centred on the differences in the amount and types of errors found in both the synchronous and asynchronous modes of communication, and whether different L1 groups committed certain errors more than their counterparts from other mother tongue backgrounds.

Hey, Steve here, creator of Readlang. Very happy to see it shared here! It is already somewhat mobile friendly, in that the design adapts to smaller screens, and I use it on my iPad all the time. I hope eventually to develop iOS and Android applications too.
Patricia Daniels's curator insight, June 4, 2013 9:35 AM

Students, I've just tested this myself and it's a useful tool. Apparently it's also becoming more mobile compatible, which will be a postive development. There's an introduction video so watch it first and see if it's a tool that you'll put to use. I've added the extension to Chrome.

You can upload webpages for reading and if you're unsure of a word, click on it for the translation. This will appear in your word bank as a flashcard with some text ( this provides you with the context which is an intelligent feature). You can then run through your list of flashcards and learn the words. Remember to put them in context when you are doing your practice as this will help you retain them.

Try it for yourself.

27 Simple Ways To Check For Understanding ~ TeachThought | Education en général | Scoop.it

"Checking for understanding is the foundation of teaching.Whether you’re using formative assessment for data to personalize learning within a unit, or more summative data to refine a curriculum map, the ability to quickly and easily check for understanding is a critical part of what you do. (Which was the idea behind our post last March, “10 Assessments You Can Perform In 90 Seconds Or Less.”)

"The following infographic Mia MacMeekin offers up 27 additional ways to check for understanding. Some aren’t necessarily quick–”Test what you learned in a new situation”–but there are a dozen or more other ideas that are worth adding to your teacher toolbox, many of which aren’t content-related, but rather cognitively-related (Locate 3 people who agree with your point of view.)"

Reflections on Teaching: Learning from our Stories | Faculty Focus

Reflections on Teaching: Learning from our Stories | Faculty Focus | Education en général | Scoop.it

By Maryellen Weimer

"Here's a great story. A graduate student is attending a lecture being given by one of her intellectual heroes, the Brazilian educator and theorist Paulo Freire. She takes notes furiously, trying to capture as many of his words as possible. Seeing that she is keenly interested in what Freire had to say, his translator asks if she would like to meet him. Of course! She is introduced and he begins by inquiring about her work. Then he graciously agrees to respond to a set of questions she and her colleagues hoped they would get the chance to ask him. She is impressed beyond belief, but time prevents her from asking one last, difficult question. They meet accidently once more at the event and he wonders if she asked all her questions? No, there is one more. "Given your work, we want to know 'where is the hope'?" Without hesitating he moves toward her, takes her face in his hands, looks into her eyes, and replies, "You tell them, 'you are the hope, because theory needs to be reinvented, not replicated ... it is a guide. We make history as we move through it and that is the hope."

How To Properly Integrate Education Technology

How To Properly Integrate Education Technology | Education en général | Scoop.it

Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory is the basis for several different models of organizational change, and it is the theory that is taught in most instructional technology programs at the Masters or Doctorate level. Organizations will not change until the people within them are ready to change, and those people have differing attitudes towards change. In a one-to-one program, often the resistance isn’t towards using technology but instead it’s resistance towards change itself.
