» Teachers Need More Training to Handle Children’s Emotions - Psych Central News

» Teachers Need More Training to Handle Children’s Emotions - Psych Central News | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it

Student teachers learn a lot about how to teach in college, but they don't get much training in how to respond to young children's emotions, such as...

"student teachers who reported more effective strategies for regulating their own emotions — for instance, thinking about a stressful situation in a different light — and who also reported more accepting beliefs about children’s emotions were more supportive of children when they had emotional outbursts, according to the researchers."

I definitely think all teachers could benefit from some of this training.

ASCD Inservice: Seven More Ways to Go From On-Task to Engaged

ASCD Inservice: Seven More Ways to Go From On-Task to Engaged | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it
Last June, I wrote Seven Ways to Go From On-Task to Engaged, which turned out to be one of the most popular topics of the year. In it I spoke about the possibility that students could technically be on-task but...

"While time on task is important, as is focus and attention, true engagement in learning involves more than external behaviors as measured by time on-task. True engagement involves the mind, the body, and the soul."

Good advice.

The ABCs of Beating Obesity

The ABCs of Beating Obesity | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it
Obesity is so entrenched in the U.S. that it will take an intense push by schools, employers, doctors and others to reverse an epidemic that accounts for billions of dollars in annual health-care costs.

"Schools, in particular, should be a "national focal point" for obesity prevention, because children spend up to half their waking hours and consume as many as half their daily calories there, the report said."

I agree!   We need healthier lunches and more physical activity in school.

Laptops replace lectures in some area schools - JSOnline

Laptops replace lectures in some area schools - JSOnline | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it
Waukesha - Last year, Kim Crosby spent about 80% of her class time teaching math concepts at Waukesha STEM Academy. For the other 20%, she helped students individually.

"Why is memorization and fact-regurgitation so heavily valued when school leaders and employers say they want greater problem-solving and critical thinking skills from graduates?"

"What is clear, at least to Miron, is that research suggests well-executed project-based learning builds higher-level thinking skills in students, and that an engaging teacher - technology or no technology - is essential."

Go project-based learning and technology in the classroom!

Fishers kids swap chairs for exercise balls | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it
Angelika Thompson's fourth-grade students at Fishers Elementary School will have to balance their bodies along with their studies when they start the new school year on Aug. 15.

"A study at the Mayo Clinic supports chairless classrooms, saying that exercise balls improve students' posture and muscle strength. Students also can burn off excess energy. And their concentration may improve."

I definitely support this idea and would love to use it in my classroom if it works as well as they claim and I could get the funding...

How Teachers Make Cell Phones Work in the Classroom

How Teachers Make Cell Phones Work in the Classroom | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it
When we talk about using cell phones in class, we’re not just talking about using cell phones in class.

"In the most ideal class settings, mobile devices disappear into the background, like markers and whiteboards, pencil and paper – not because they’re not being used, but because they’re simply tools, a means to an end. The “end” can be any number of things: to gauge student understanding of a concept, to capture notes and ideas to be used and studied later, to calculate, to communicate, to express ideas."

I think using cell phones as learning tools could go well if they are used in a meaningful way.  Since my students are likely going to be too young to own cell phones, I probably won't be able to do this, but it is interesting none the less.

Junk Food, TV-Watching Linked Among Teens | MyHealthNewsDaily.com

Junk Food, TV-Watching Linked Among Teens | MyHealthNewsDaily.com | Education-Caitlin | Scoop.it
Kids who watch a lot of television tend to eat fewer fruits and vegetables and more junk food, a new study says.

"Television-watching among children has previously been linked with eating more junk food and less fruits and vegetables, but the new study is the first national, large sample of teens in the U.S."

"On average, students watched an estimated 2.4 hours of television per day, and devoted 2.8 hours a day to computer time, similar to previous studies. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting all screen time to less than two hours per day."

Reduce screen time, get more physical activity, and eat healthier.
