Taking selfies at funerals. Tagging pictures of teens drinking alcohol at parties. Kids (and adults for that matter) post a lot of silly stuff online -- and although most of it is chatter, some of what might seem harmless leads to tragic consequences. But is it the job of schools to teach kids the dos and don'ts of social media?

It is a combined effort requiring communication between parents, educators, and students. I found that the digital technology charge was often led by those who were not in classrooms and who rarely engaged parents in meaningful and open conversations. Social media is not one more thing to be dumped on classroom teachers. It takes a joint effort.

I definitely think that schools need to teach social media skills. It goes hand in hand with good research skills and information literacy. It should not be an add on it should be part of it.
