How to manage phones in your school

How to manage phones in your school | Education | Scoop.it

There has been a dramatic rise in mobile devices crossing back and forth between the school gates, and be it smartphones, tablets, notebooks or laptops, whether they are parent-owned or school-owned, there remains a duty of care that schools must practice. Schools have a responsibility to ensure that students’ mobile access to the world is properly managed and protects them from harm.

"This is an opinion piece for the pros and cons of using both iPads and the traditional PCs in teaching. Since I am beginning my fourth year of using an iPad in my classes, I thought it would be great time to compare how each device is used, as well as state how they can complement one another. I contacted my colleague Jonathan Wylie, and we brainstormed together some ideas for this post."

Flipped learning skepticism: Do students want to have lectures?

Flipped learning skepticism: Do students want to have lectures? | Education | Scoop.it

Which is harder, hearing about something or doing something? And if doing something is harder than hearing, wouldn’t students want to do their work with an instructor and a group of friends present to help, rather than hear about it with the instructor present and then be left to their own devices for the doing part? Wouldn’t it be better if you were doing the hardest part of the work when I am most likely to be able to help you?

Can Students ‘Go Deep’ With Digital Reading? | Education | Scoop.it

While ever more schools adopt textbooks and student reading materials to digital readers like iPads and Chromebooks, some recent research suggests students may comprehend more from reading print. Middle school students who read from both print and e-books showed they understood more of what they read from the ink-and-paper book

As students buy fewer textbooks and utilize more e-books provided by institution purchase, such as PharmacyAccess, this needs to be kept in mind.  Do we need to provide paper handouts of the key points? Should students take notes or create mind-maps of the key points to help further reinforce what they are reading electronically? There is also new studies highlighting the importance of note taking. Faculty may need to develop new approaches to achieve the deeper learning desired in our electronic device world.

Helen Teague's curator insight, September 13, 2014 6:40 AM

A Flipped Classroom? Or Should It Be Sideways? | Edudemic | Education | Scoop.it

Since it is a less radical departure from what students and parents expect, there’s less stress and uncertainty. If you fear that students may not have access to video lectures or get distracted from learning while on their own time, then teacher resources and equipment available in most schools solve this logistics problem. Wealth and home situation do not become a barrier to learning.

Makerspaces for Students With Special Needs - Edutopia

Makerspaces for Students With Special Needs - Edutopia | Education | Scoop.it
Maker education is a new school of educational thought which strives to deliver constructivist, project-based learning curriculum and instructional units. Makerspaces can be full high school workshops with a bevy of high-tech tools, or as small and low tech as one corner of an elementary classroom. What defines a makerspace isn't just the tools and equipment, but the learning that happens as students begin making and creating projects. Educators need to design these spaces to reach a diverse set of learners, particularly populations underserved in STEM subjects, and students with neurological differences, learning differences, and special needs. Makerspaces provide a number of benefits and opportunities for typical students. It just so happens that the type of learning Makerspaces promote best is also the type of learning that students with learning challenges need most.

Technology allows me to assess my students in ways that simply was not possible formerly. I can see at the tap of a screen or a click of a button what level each student has attained and I can then plan accordingly. Differentiated instruction really becomes achievable with such technology, not only in the level of tasks set, but in the way in which students can tackle their work.

3 Powerful Web Tools to Create Whiteboard Animation Videos for Your Class ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Education | Scoop.it
Whiteboard animation videos are videos that draw themselves. They involve an animated use of images, shapes, characters, sounds and voice-overs to create a clip. This form of video production has been very popular recently and is widely used by some leading educational YouTube channels such as TED Ed and RSA Animate. Creating a whiteboard animation video is no longer a graphic designer's job. There are actually several web tools that allow you to easily put together an animated video with as simple tools as drag and drop. As a teacher, you can  use these animations to create and share tutorials,  presentations, step by tsp guides, and many more. Below are three  of my favourite tools I would recommend for you:

How to Turn Books into Audiobooks with Natural Reader - Mac | Life

How to Turn Books into Audiobooks with Natural Reader - Mac | Life | Education | Scoop.it

"Audiobooks are great because they mean you can enjoy a book while doing something else — or just because it’s always nice to have a book read to you! With Siri on the iPad offering voice control and dictation, you might think you can “convert” your books into audio books by enlisting the help of Apple’s virtual assistant, but sadly, it can’t help. While Siri can speak out individual passages from iBooks, you can’t just sit back and let it read out the whole thing.

However, all is not lost. There is a great app available called Natural Reader that reads out the text from all kinds of documents, including Word files, PDF documents, and ePub digital books — you can even use it with web pages. This means work documents or reference material can be read out loud while you work on projects or reports. It’s also great if you’re studying and need to take in lots of information. Think of Natural Reader as turnin'g long-form online writing into a kind of podcast to listen to at your leisure.
