Vanessa Camilleri's curator insight, August 21, 2014 2:22 PM

People always seem to be complaining about this... our children are distracted... who wants to read when they can play games, but in effect children tend to copy their parents. By instilling a passion for reading from a young age we can try to balance out the claim that the young children do not like books or reading. One story a day... just like the apple, helps develop the creativity in children. It doesn't hurt by having the children making up their own stories and writing them together with their parents!

Clicking on the real: telling stories and engaging audiences through interactive documentaries. | Education | Scoop.it

"An interesting thing about contemporary media is just how much of it is factual. From journalism to social media, YouTube to reality TV we are surrounded by media that claims to be true. Often this content has a definite agenda; it wants to persuade us, make us click, join in and pass it on. How can we understand our changing relationship to factual media? And why is documentary scholarship well placed to help us do so? Kate Nash explores new interactive dimensions to documentary that may encourage wider engagement."

I'm a little partial to this documentary game as it's produced by Canada's National Film Board (NFB).  The NFB has been recognized as a world leader in transmedia and interactive media.  I grew up watching their films, and love to see themselves reinventing themselves to stay in the game.

I'm looking forward to digging deeper into Fort McMoney.  The format has been described as - where film marries video game.  I'm curious to see if it will impact my feelings about the place.

The Myth Of Digital Citizenship And Why We Need To Teach It Anyway | EdReach

The Myth Of Digital Citizenship And Why We Need To Teach It Anyway | EdReach | Education | Scoop.it
At one time in the not so distant past there were no cell phones. And then everything changed at a rate faster than the speed of amending a student handbook. I can distinctly remember the first time one of my 8th grade students brought a cell phone to school. It really wasn’t that big of a deal, more of a novelty really. I mean one student with a cell phone had next to no bearing on our day to day school operations. But then a second student brought a cell phone.

Another 66 percent in both groups have access to laptops. Sixty-one percent of middle schoolers and 50 percent of high schoolers have access to tablets. Online Writing with Clarity Infographic - Business 2 Community

Online Writing with Clarity Infographic - Business 2 Community | Education | Scoop.it

Online writing may include blogging, marketing copy, website or newsletter content and they all share the need for clarity.  One of the first things we learn about writing online is we have seconds to capture a reader and their attention span is short. Clear, concise writing wasn’t invented online, however, it has always been taught to writers as a best practice.  Long before the Internet, George Orwell said, “If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out."....

Great poetry can be the kind of art that stays with you forever, be it Mid-Term Break by Seamus Heaney or Daffodils by William Wordsworth. However, given the old-school nature of poetry means that a lot of students will need a great introduction from a teacher. The Artists Way is a life-changing book. But you can't just buy it and leave it on the shelf. You can't just dip into it and do the bits you want. If you can do the exercises set over the 12 weeks (inc 30 mins of The Morning Pages a day), your life will change. That damn book The Secret promises something like this. This book actually delivers.

If you do want to do this course in a book, find running mates. There is also a course online at Writers Village University - I found this great because we were all anonymous and therefore didn't care how much of ourselves we revealed.
