The 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship Infographic - Edutech for Teachers

The 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship Infographic - Edutech for Teachers | Education | Scoop.it
As with any other type of education, we—as educators—can’t make assumptions that students have the necessary knowledge to make good decisions when surfing the web. And even if they do—they’re kids, so yeah, they constantly need to be reminded of what’s cool and what’s not.

With the wide variety of resources available for teachers, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be promoting the importance of behaving safely and responsibly in the digital world. Speaking of resources, check out the nifty infographic shown below, one that can be used to address various aspects of digital citizenship.

The communication explosion reaches its peak when you explore the endless avenues running through TED Talks. Moreover, the title educator embodies many forms within these talks.

So it’s precisely for this reason that any educator benefits from so many of these talks. Each speaker reveals his or her passion of a view or a subject with the enthusiasm of a first-year teacher.

Using TED Talks to convey an important message or spark creativity might be more effective in teaching students than an individual agenda or preconceived notion of what should be said. Furthermore, TED Talks challenges educators everywhere to think differently and encourage the same in their students.

These are the best TED Talks for any educator because they make us laugh, warm our hearts, break down barriers, and always inspire us to dig a little deeper and push a little harder, challenging your educator perspective.

Nine Characteristics of a Great Teacher | Faculty Focus

Nine Characteristics of a Great Teacher | Faculty Focus | Education | Scoop.it
Years ago, as a young, eager student, I would have told you that a great teacher was someone who provided classroom entertainment and gave very little homework. Needless to say, after many years of K-12 administrative experience and giving hundreds of teacher evaluations, my perspective has changed.
Anna Burgess's insight:

keep these in mind for the next performance review.

Apps in Education: Student Documented Workflows for the iPad

Apps in Education: Student Documented Workflows for the iPad | Education | Scoop.it

"Students love to share how they do things. This is especially true when they are working on iPads. I have started to collect and document some of these workflows to share with other classes and other schools. These are all taken directly from my conversations with Yr 4, 5 and 6 kids. All I have done is to put them in a similar format. What is interesting for me is how reflection of both the process and the product is so important for them. The student's talk about moving full circle so if they are not satisfied with the product they can modify or enhance it further.

I see these being used two ways. The first is as a simple visual prompt for students. The top half of the sheet is perfect for this. They get to see a quick process. They get to see how it could work. The best thing about this is that people will see these and go, "That good but if I was going to do this I would use.......".

Google invents smart contact lens with built-in camera: Superhuman Terminator-like vision here we come

Google invents smart contact lens with built-in camera: Superhuman Terminator-like vision here we come | Education | Scoop.it
Google has invented a new smart contact lens with an integrated camera. By virtue of being part of the contact lens, the camera would naturally follow your gaze, allowing for a huge range of awesome applications, from the basis of a bionic eye system for blind and visually impaired people, through to early warning systems (the camera spots a hazard before your brain does), facial recognition, and superhuman powers (telescopic and infrared/night vision). In related news, Google Glass is publicly available today in the US for one day only (still priced at $1500).

Teacher librarians transform student learning : ASLA report

The Australian School Library Association (ASLA) is calling upon Australian educational decision makers to employ teacher librarians as part of the solution to improve national student learning and literacy.  The association's report, Future learning and school libraries, highlights the positive role teacher librarians have in supporting future learning within the school.

Karen Bonanno's curator insight, April 14, 2013 9:57 PM

A summary of key points in the report include:
- a review of the global environment in which modern learners and educators are immersed,
- the educational implications of trends affecting contemporary schooling,
- the means of evaluating education outcomes, and
- key alerts on the critical role of the teacher librarian.

Rashmi Moghe's comment, June 17, 2013 9:57 AM
Australian School Library Association (2013). Future Learning and School Libraries. ASLA, April 2013. Retrieved from http://www.asla.org.au/advocacy.aspx

Taking the Key alerts included are-
Globalisation facilitates connectivity across schools to allow for collaborative engagement in the exchange of information and creation of new knowledge for students.
The teacher librarian and the school library are vital agencies in facilitating global connectivity.
Teacher librarians are instrumental in
• the design and delivery of digital literacy programs,
• adopting digital citizenship approaches to exercising social responsibility and
ethical practice, and
• creating awareness of cultural sensitivity in a digital environment.
They also identify, store and disseminate relevant and appropriate information to
support the teaching and learning process; Teacher Librarians assess the quality of
information and customise access to that information.
