6 (Human) Skills That Won't Be Replaced by Artificial Intelligence

6 (Human) Skills That Won't Be Replaced by Artificial Intelligence  | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

In recent years, movies such as I, Robot and Ex Machina have been fascinating audiences with the premise that robots will one day take over the world. Although this idea may sound crazy to some, in one very real sense, robots may very well be taking over the world—the work world, that is.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

A machine can't replace an empathic, creative person who plans, organizes, manages and uses good judgment. But it sure can crunch those numbers!

We have been preparing children for a future we cannot fully describe for some time and how new tools might disrupt that future.

John Dewey argued habits and skills were learned in the present moment where children lived. Technology is a conversation between craftspeople, in this case teachers and students, and their tools.

One of the colleges is from NC--look at the comments to the article...OER definitely attracts controversy..funny how quality is often brought up, but not for publisher textbooks or materials (tests, assignments), in which you can find errors, both small and large..

A Guide for Resisting Edtech: the Case against Turnitin - Hybrid Pedagogy | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

Students often find themselves uploading their content — their creative work — into the learning management system. Perhaps they retain a copy of the file on their computer; but with learning analytics and plagiarism detection software, they still often find themselves having their data scanned and monetized, often without their knowledge or consent.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

Wow-this is a very interesting article-I'm sure it will spark lots of discussion.

RALEIGH – They’re the Swiss Army knife of higher ed:  Whether it’s preparing students to attend a four-year institution, training for a trade or training customized for a local employer, community colleges prepare students for many, many different tasks.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

This was really surprising, even though I knew more folks were attending Community Colleges, I didn't realize how many were transferring to 4 year universities:

"As North Carolina weathered the Great Recession, the number of community-college transfer students grew from 5,931 in 2006 to 9,373 in Fall 2015."

10 Programs Closing the Gender Gap in STEM

Despite more women studying STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths), when it comes to jobs in these fields, the gender gap remains wide. There are various reasons for this gap: Girls are often less encouraged to go into STEM fields; jobs in this industry tend not to be very flexible..

Becky Roehrs's insight:

These organizations are combating the STEM gender gap from many different directions-when I was a computer programmer, 34% were women; as of 2015, only 18% of computer programmers are women..

The Ten Characteristics of Teachers Who Successfully (Teach) and Use EdTech

The Ten Characteristics of Teachers Who Successfully (Teach) and Use EdTech | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

Technology is changing the landscape of teaching and learning. Textbooks are being phased out, makerspaces are becoming increasingly common, and communication between teachers and students has never been easier or more abundant. Technology is unavoidable, and while some teachers may still feel hesitant about the changes that are coming fast and furiously in the wake of these advancements, most teachers want to embrace the potential. Teachers that are successfully integrating educational technology in their classrooms are beacons for their peers – and there is much they can teach us.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

These ten characteristics are true of great teachers, whether they use edtech or not..you have to care about your students-otherwise, why are you there?

7 Ways to Keep the Humanity in Online Courses

7 Ways to Keep the Humanity in Online Courses | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

If you have ever taken or considered taking an online course, you are well aware of some of the challenges and criticisms that online courses face. Some consider the fact that there is no physical, literal classroom a disadvantage. Others consider it an advantage. When taking an online course, it is true that there are no students in the desks next to you, and that there may be hundreds or even more than a thousand students participating in the same class. The lack of a physical classroom, however, does not have to be a disadvantage.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

I like all seven of these tips and use a number of surveys in my course to find out my student's background, interests, and concerns-plus I ask what they are using (or not) in the course

Portable Green Screens in the Library

Portable Green Screens in the Library  | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

Earlier in the school year my students created whole-class videos using our large green screen studio. While I assigned students a variety of tasks (director, camera operator, acting coach), my students spent the majority of their time on the carpet as an audience member. At the end of these units I wondered how we could increase student ownership of the production. Could I have my students create a green screen movie without having to play the audience member for large portions of the time? Could they be empowered to create a movie independently of the teacher? Could this be done by kindergartners and first graders?

For most of the school year I struggled with these questions. That was until I met Brenda Windsor and Mary O'Neil of Trumbull, CT at the Fairfield University "Education Technology Collaboration Day" in March.  Brenda and Mary presented on how they have incorporated green screens in the classroom, and shared the idea of using a pizza box to make a miniature portable studio. Here is a link to the video they created.  From that moment, I was on a mission to have my K-2 students write, direct, film & star in their own collaborative group mini green screen movies. "

Via John Evans
Becky Roehrs's insight:

What a great idea-use pizza boxes as your green screens for your iPads (or smartphones), add (tape) green (paper) to rulers, then add (tape) animal cutouts (or people, monsters, aliens) to your green rulers, and move your rulers around on your green screen pizza box! You're ready for a live-action video production.

Research: Facebook Gender and Cyberbullying Targets

Female university students are more likely to be ridiculed online about their sexual activity, and men are more likely to be bullied about their sexual orientation and whether they’re skilled or talented enough at sports and hobbies, a new study has found. A new study out of the University of Puget Sound, led by Nicholas Brody, an assistant professor in communication studies, examined nearly 500 instances of cyberbullying on Facebook.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

Unfortunately, some things haven't changed-women are still being bullied (online) about their "social" life, and men about their sexual orientation and "sports" skills
