Six Things That Make (College) Teachers Successful

Six Things That Make (College) Teachers Successful | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
1. Study the knowledge base of teaching and learning.

You have chosen to teach in higher education because you are a subject-matter specialist with a tremendous knowledge of your discipline. As you enter or continue your career, there is another field of knowledge you need to know: teaching and learning. What we know about teaching and learning continues to grow dramatically. It includes developing effective instructional strategies, reaching today’s students, and teaching with technology. Where is this knowledge base? Books, articles in pedagogical periodicals, newsletters, conferences, and online resources provide ample help. Take advantage of your institution’s center for teaching and learning or other professional development resources.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

I deeply value the last suggestion-keep the passion. To succeed, you need to be passionate about your learning and teaching. If you're not passionate about what you're doing-you need to do something else.

#Gamergate—and what it means for gaming in education | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

Games, but especially games for education, need to allow for gender equality and freedom of expression, say gaming experts.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

This reminds me of IBM Diversity training that was required over a decade ago..creating and selling "products" to just one audience limits your appeal..and profit. It made business sense (and I thought it was the right thing to do, but boy, were there ever those that disagreed).

It's just smart to make excellent and fun games that appeal to everyone..especially when 48% of the gamers today are....female.

Thinking Horizontally and Vertically About Blended Learning

Thinking Horizontally and Vertically About Blended Learning | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
Blended learning has gone from being an interesting new hybrid of traditional and online courses to being an expected part of American education. When the Sloan Consortium last studied blended learning in 2007, it found “a lot of room for growth” in the market for blended courses. It found “consumer preference for online and blended delivery far exceeds reported experience,” indicating that demand was ahead of supply at that point.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

Blended learning ranges the gamut now from adding content online for your f2f class, meeting f2f once in a while, to meeting online most of the time. You name it, if learning and online materials and/or contact are involved, it's "blended learning"

First we have to agree what our school's purpose is..which is all over the map right now. Then we need to value teachers and not only encourage but make sure teachers, parents, administrators, and students can work together to create authentic learning environments for our students.
