Top 7 Educational Technology Tools, Apps, and Resources for Higher Education

Top 7 Educational Technology Tools, Apps, and Resources for Higher Education | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
Higher education is experiencing a time of rapid change. The traditional picture of a college-aged student sitting in a large lecture hall is no longer. Students complete their education at any age, in a variety of formats, and, sometimes, from multiple institutions.

A recent study by the Babson Survey Research Group as reported in US News and World Report found that approximately 5.8 million students took at least one online class in 2014. The average age of someone enrolled in higher education now is 25. This change puts the focus on educational technologies that can provide solutions for classroom management, …

Teacher/Instructor Myths: Video Equipment = Fantastic videos

Teacher/Instructor Myths: Video Equipment = Fantastic videos | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
There seems to be this idea among instructors and teachers that if there was just a room, with video equipment, at your school or college, that creating videos would be easy. You'd walk in, breeze out, and have a video you could post in your LMS or web site. Sorry, it isn't so..
Becky Roehrs's insight:

Maybe at some universities there are faculty members waiting in line to work on their videos at the college media lab (with staff or alone), but it doesn't seem to be popular. Why? It's a lot easier to create a video with your phone, an app or a simple tool.

How to Help Faculty Build Online Courses -- Campus Technology | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
The University of Arizona developed a toolkit to help new instructional designers and online instructors get up to speed in creating courses for students that might never show their faces on campus.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

I'd like to see articles that help online instructors build courses without instructional designers-community colleges and smaller colleges and universities have very limited resources to assist online faculty, especially online part-time faculty..

These 3 tips are common sense, but are important-I provide a survey and discussion area for the first week to get a feel for what my student's backgrounds are, and why they are taking the class. Open Source and the NGDLE

Open Source and the NGDLE | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
Participation in a diverse community, coupled with the natural affordances for customization provided by open-source software, creates rich soil for innovation and problem solving.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

Key take-aways from the article (from Apereo leaders):

  • "Almost since the learning management system was established as a product category, there have been those who have chafed at its boundaries and constraints.

  • If the transformation to an NGDLE implies a disaggregation of the "services formerly known as the LMS," in order to effect their more flexible recomposition, factors other than technical feasibility and pedagogical desirability come into play."

2017’s States with the Best & Worst Community-College Systems

2017’s States with the Best & Worst Community-College Systems | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

With back-to-school season in full swing and several states, such as New York and Rhode Island, offering free community-college education starting this month, the personal-finance website WalletHub recently released its report on 2017’s Best & Worst Community Colleges, coupled with its state-by-state ranking of the Best & Worst Community-College Systems.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

Wow, North Carolina has 58 community colleges, I saw over 40 on the individual best & worst list, and of those, one was in the top 100! Only five were in the top 200,  about 10 were in the top 300, five in the top 400, and the rest, in the top 500 and 600, with one in the top 700. Granted, the criteria seems a bit murky, but it's a bit disheartening..

Images on a Website are NOT Public Domain It is essential that our students are able to communicate digitally and visually. However, this also means we need to ensure that students really understand copyright, fair use, creative commons, and public domain. There is a pervasive feeling that anything on the Internet is free, it’s not. …
Becky Roehrs's insight:

Yep, this is really hard for students (and everyone else) to grasp: If it isn't your image-someone else owns it-and it can't be used without express permission and under the owners terms only.

Interesting observations:

  • Are you "over-teaching" to "prove" your competence?
  • Do you have and enforce classroom behavior policies?
  • And do you check out your student performance data to find out how well you're teaching (don't focus on evals which can be biased)
