GITN: Pilgrims' Progress

This classic Geography in the News by Neal Lineback has been re-released on his Lineback World View site.  This is an excellent lesson for K-12 educators to prepare their students to understand the historic and geographic context of Thanksgiving.

Thinking About The R in SAMR - Edudemic

Thinking About The R in SAMR - Edudemic | Educated | Scoop.it

"The end of the school year is a time for reflection. What did we do well? What do we need to improve upon? These are the typical questions that both individuals and school districts ask at the end of the spring. However, there is another important question that I struggle to answer as well. This is the question about how we have changed? What have we done differently this year to push our thinking and the thinking of our students? To be more specific, I find myself dwelling on the Rin Dr. Ruben Puentedura’s SAMR model, a model designed to help educators integrate technology into teaching and learning."

Ten Tips for Grabbing Students’ Attention With Mobile (EdSurge News)

Ten Tips for Grabbing Students’ Attention With Mobile (EdSurge News) | Educated | Scoop.it

"Today’s college students arrive on campus with an average of seven devices. Eighty percent of these students will carry and use a mobile phone during every waking hour of the day. So, how do you navigate all of this screen mayhem to reach students where they are…eyes to the screen? That’s the challenge we’re addressing at Campus Quad. Working with both top mobile engagement industry leaders and trailblazing innovators in higher education, we’re defining a framework for mobile engagement that is based on communication channels that capture students in their “always connected” environment, in real-time."

Apps that rise to the top: Tested and approved by teachers

Apps that rise to the top: Tested and approved by teachers | Educated | Scoop.it

With the thousands of educational apps vying for the attention of busy teachers, it can be hard to sift for the gold. Michelle Luhtala, a savvy librarian from New Canaan High School in Connecticut has crowd-sourced the best, most extensive list of appsvoted on by educators around the country.

“I wanted to make sure we had some flexibility because there’s no one app that’s better than all the others,” Luhtala said. Some apps are best for younger students, others are more complicated, better suited for high school students. Many apps do one thing really well, but aren’t great at everything. Still others are bought, redesigned or just disappear — so it’s always good to know about an array of tools to suit the need at hand.

Gamify your classrooms with Kahoot. | ipadders.eu | Educated | Scoop.it

"This week I’ve been getting excited about using Kahoot in the classroom. Kahoot delivers online quizzes and surveys to your students.

It works very similar to the more well-known Socrative. The teacher displays the question and the answers on the beamer or tv in the front of the classroom. The students see the corresponding icon and color on their screen. They have 30 seconds to answer on their devices and get points for every question they answer right. The quicker they answer the more points they receive. After each question the top 5 students are shown on the board with their scores. This is where it gets exciting. The students love this immediate feedback and want to get to the top position. I have never seen students so focused on answering the questions correctly."

3 Steps to Creating an Awesome Virtual Museum in Class - iPads in Education

3 Steps to Creating an Awesome Virtual Museum in Class - iPads in Education | Educated | Scoop.it

"You're spending an afternoon browsing the exhibits at an art museum. If you're anything like me, you'd probably appreciate the art a lot more if you could bring someone along that could explain the history and nuances of the pieces on display. Now imagine pointing a device at the painting and seeing it morph into a dynamic video giving you all the information you wanted about the art. Welcome to augmented reality.

Virtual reality replaces the real world with an artificial, digital environment. In contrast, augmented reality alters your view of the real world by layering it with associated digital information. Augmented reality uses your device's camera to view the immediate environment and display media when it sees an object it recognizes. It has been utilized as a marketing and informational tool by many industries. Using an augmented reality app, you can point your device at an advertisement in a magazine and get detailed product demonstrations. Aim it at a sign outside a house for sale and get an after hours virtual walk-through the property. There are also many ways augmented reality can be used in education."
