3 Key Factors for Creating a "Maker Culture" at Your School -- School Planning & Management

3 Key Factors for Creating a "Maker Culture" at Your School -- School Planning & Management | Educate Now | Scoop.it
As the way we learn and work has evolved, teaching styles, curriculum and classroom spaces must change as well. Our students need to think “like innovators” in order to solve increasingly complex, global and multi-disciplinary problems. These problems require skills like flexible thinking, resilience and curiosity — skills that are not nurtured in today’s traditional educational models. As architects, we know that design can profoundly affect and enhance teaching and learning. School design must not only accommodate 21st century learning methods, but also reinforce the skills students will need for an evolving society. Thoughtful, creative and flexible design of these spaces is critical in realizing the learning goals.

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum | Educate Now | Scoop.it

In our emerging digital world, a new medium of exchange has developed: online engagement, especially via social media. Effectively engaging online requires a myriad of skills that we strive to foster in school – effective written communication, brevity and civility. These components are often highlighted in Digital Citizenship programs, but in tradition-bound K12 education, we often deride social media as trite or ineffective.

Interesting post with good ideas.

LibrarianLand's curator insight, April 7, 2014 2:53 PM

Many students still do not understand the limitations of finding information on the free web. Google is about the extent of it and if it isn't found in the first few results, it does not exist or is too hard to find (or worse still, what is found must be "it.").

From article: "We need to ensure that they know how to evaluate a website, a blog post, a tweet, a Facebook entry. These evaluative skills transfer cross curricularly and prepare students for the broader world of online communication."

Important elements associated with digital literacy, especially the last one. Doug Belshaw's criteria from his TED Talk include:

Cultural – Look at the context in which the literacy is situatedCognitive – How do we think when we are using a device (vs when we are not)?Constructive – We should aim to use technology in a constructive (vs a passive) wayCommunicative – We should be using technology to enhance our communicationsConfident – You need to be confident to jump in feet first and explore/use/master/learn technologyCreative – Using technology in the classroom requires some creativity and risk taking – don’t stick to the basics when you can test out a new idea or use for technologyCritical – You need the ability to look at the technologies you’re using (and what you’re using them for) with a critical eyeCivic- We should be using the technologies available to us for greater good (which can be widely defined)

Have students ask questions and solve real-world problems. Questions should require students to: Analyze, Synthesize ,Create Empathize, Interpret.

Reference background  knowledge.

Defend alternative perspectives.

Determine what they know and don't know

Organize students into learning groups.

Make learning segments manageable through modeling and mastery.

Guide, facilitate, challenge, and support.

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library

Creating Our Own Unique Learning Environments in Your School Library | Educate Now | Scoop.it

One of the most amazing transformations that has taken place at NMHS is the creation of the Makerspace in what was our traditional library. A space that could once be compared to a barren wasteland is now a thriving learning metropolis where students flock to tinker, invent, create, collaborate, work, and most importantly, learn. When I hired Laura I basically told her what her budget was and that she had complete control of how she wanted to use the money. I could never have imagined how quickly she could radically transform this outdated space, using money that in the past had always been spent on books, magazines, and electronic databases.

Beyond the Maker Space | Backtalk

Beyond the Maker Space | Backtalk | Educate Now | Scoop.it
“ How often do librarians find themselves trying to explain that the library’s mission is not about books but about information? This public misunderstanding about what we are doing and why leads to a community misconception of what we should be doing in the future. The reality is that we as librarians make the same mistake all the time. We know intellectually that informational flow and access are our main missions, but our decisions and our hearts often put the focus on books. Books, in many cases, remain by far the best delivery vehicle for information, but there are many subject areas where other informational vehicles would be more effective, even if implementing those vehicles might mean less money spent on books.”
