10 Free Tools for Building Blended & Online Learning | Educadores | Scoop.it
Remember though that finding the right tool is important, but how you structure and design interaction with the content is way more important. Taking classroom activities and materials and placing them on a web-based platform and expecting them to work is sure way to disappoint students. You need to think carefully about how the student will engage with the materials and how the materials relate to each other to ensure that your materials don’t just test the students’ knowledge and abilities, but that they guide and enable the student to hypothesise and make and confirm deductions in order to encourage deeper levels of autonomous learning.

Bloom's revised Taxonomy with verbs!

Jim Lerman's curator insight, August 20, 12:55 PM

I'm on a personal campaign to add 2 levels above Creating to Bloom's Cognitive Taxonomy (don't forget he wrote about 3 domains of learning...Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor). I believe our field tends to overemphasize the Cognitive domain at the expense of the other 2, and to the detriment of learners.

Anyhow, the 2 levels above Creating that I'm concerned about are: Reflecting and Sharing. My reasoning goes like this:

Reflecting Once we go through all 6 levels (and they are not hierarchical, a learning sequence can start or end with any of them), if we want students to enhance their metacognition, it is important for us to build in reflective experiences. Such experiences enhance students' abilities to be more self-aware of how they learn and the strategies that do or don't work well for them.

Sharing - We teachers often remark that our knowledge of a particular topic solidifies when we teach it to someone else...the act of sharing brings out our awareness of nuances, relationships, perceptions, modes of expression/communication, and our interpersonal skills of working with others; all things that are very important to people's success in our current era. Our students deserve to become proficient in sharing effectively.

My 2 cents.

Flipped Learning: Using online video to transform learning :: Nesta

Flipped Learning: Using online video to transform learning :: Nesta | Educadores | Scoop.it
Digital technology is allowing teachers and learners to explore new approaches to traditional school lessons. The growing availability of online instructional videos creates the opportunity to move the learning of new content to outside of the classroom, freeing up class time for teachers to coach, and students to actively work on developing their own understanding.

Nesta and NFER carried out a study to explore how this approach can work in secondary maths classrooms across the UK, and how teachers use it to change the approaches to learning students take. We saw teachers use the approach to encourage students to take active responsibility for their learning, and for some to use it to accelerate their learning.

This project has produced a research report delving into the effects of Flipped Learning and the conditions needed for success. For those focused on classroom practice, we have also created a research-based practitioner guide to the approach, and a specific how-to guide for using resources from the Khan Academy and linking them to the UK curricula

Jim Lerman's insight: Three practical guides to implementing the Flipped Classroom model in secondary level math education. The setting is schools in the U.K., with a particular emphasis on Khan Academy videos -- however, much of the material is generalizable. Be sure to look at each of the 3 different guides.

In 1700, Japan was hit by a tsunami; they knew that tsunamis were caused by earthquakes, but there was no earthquake of that magnitude in Japan that could have caused it.  They called it the Orphan Tsunami, and it puzzled everyone.  Centuries later, data confirmed that a massive earthquake in the Pacific Northwest occurred in 1700 and it's tsunami traveled across the ocean much like the this computer simulation of the 1960 Chile earthquake.

This article show three distinct cultural approaches to the concept of choice, showing how they shape people and communities and cultural systems.  The three models discussed are:

  • One American model: Give me personal autonomy or give me death.
  • The Amish model: Belonging, not choice, is crucial.
  • One Asian model: Focus on interdependence and harmony, not independence and self-expression.

This TED talk from Malcolm Gladwell is also an interesting exploration into the world of choice and options.
