Critical Digital Literacy Explained for Teachers

Critical Digital Literacy Explained for Teachers | Educadores innovadores y aulas con memoria | Scoop.it

Critical digital literacy is one of the essential required competencies for the 21st century educator. In an era of unprecedented personal publishing, infobesity (information obesity) becomes a real issue. Teachers need to be able to critically  assess and evaluate the materials and knowledge they come across. This could be done through adopting a critical thinking lens to filter things that could otherwise unconsciously affect one's stance and interpretation of  a given meaning.

Juliet Hinrichsen and Antony Coombs from University of Greenwich developed this excellent framework to help you understand the concept of critical digital literacy. This framework is made up of 5 dimensions:

This topic is crucial for all educators. "Teachers need to be able to critically  assess and evaluate the materials and knowledge they come across." And it doesn't matter where the materials are published. Can't agree more...

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, December 12, 12:14 PM

About five years ago, I worked with a large suburban school on developing awareness and teaching/learning skill sets in the area of critical literacy. The nuances of digital and even print text within structure and conventions suggests meaning that extends far beyond the alphabetic word. This framework would have been a helpful tool to ground discussion and build understanding.

EdTechTeam: The How (and Why) It's Time to Create Digital Portfolios | Educadores innovadores y aulas con memoria | Scoop.it
Digital Student Portfolios are becoming more important now than ever! Students are creating and remixing information like never before – and where is all that amazing work going? At my old school it was wiped off the devices at the end of the year – a heart-wrenching idea that I was personally against. This is why we need to publish student work in one place and let it serve as a home of student reflection, and a become a destination to unleash student pride and curiosity.

There are many reasons to begin the journey to digital portfolios – here are just a few.

Historical Geography of Whaling | Educadores innovadores y aulas con memoria | Scoop.it

"Summer 2014 brought a sight that had not been seen since 1941: the Charles W. Morgan leaving the Mystic River for the Atlantic Ocean, stopping at several New England harbors before eventually arriving in New Bedford, Massachusetts where the ship was built in 1841. The Charles W. Morgan is the last remaining wooden whaling ship in the world, and a National Historic Landmark."

A good visual on Bloom's Taxonomy vs Depth of Knowledge

A good visual on Bloom's Taxonomy vs Depth of Knowledge | Educadores innovadores y aulas con memoria | Scoop.it
Bloom's taxonomy and Depth of Knowledge are two popular conceptual learning frameworks. They both approach the learning process from relatively different stands:Bloom's taxonomy seem to emphasize the categorization of tasks in a way that corresponds with students thinking levels ( e,g knowing, understanding, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating). Depth of Knowledge (DOK), on the hand, shifts the focus from the product or end result to focusing on the cognitive and thinking process. It extends beyond the what and digs deeper into the how.

Here is a beautiful visual I came across today on my Pinterest feeds which illustrates the difference between Blooms' taxonomy and Depth of Knowledge.

Why Do Rivers Curve?

Via Seth Dixon
more...
LEONARDO WILD's curator insight, December 5, 8:56 AM

Water has its own rhythm and pulsates while flowing, it turns over itself when allowed to. When water is in its own natural environment and is allowed to flow and create its own space, it will create the sinuous rivers and when this happens, where its vortex direction changes—rotating clockwise or counterclockwise—it will release the silt and other materials it was carrying in suspension and they will fall to the bottom. Also, as it turns over itself, water cools down, becoming heavier. It is this motion that makes the plain rivers become sinuous, more so than whatever other influence that may have "loosened" its shores.

Sally Egan's curator insight, December 7, 4:27 PM

A very siual form using simple language to explain the meandering of rivers. Applicable to the course work on Hydrosphere.

YEC Geo's curator insight, December 7, 8:15 PM

Actually a very good video.  My one quibble is with the introduction, when the narrator talks about mountain streams "carving" their gorges.  The puzzle of how small streams could possibly carve out deep bedrock canyons is an ongoing research problem, and is difficult to resolve from a gradualistic perspective.

There are some beautiful images and places to be discovered through this quiz.  This set of aerial photographs challenges the reader to guess the country where the image was taken; even with two options, it's quite challenging.  This forces the reader to use context clues in the physical and human landscapes to make an education guess.  If you are looking for more, here are two quizzes (one and two) from the Atlantic, plus another from Joseph Kerski embedded into ArcGIS online .  To get students exploring more Google Earth images and saving their own finds, Stratocam is a great place to start.
