In this post Jackie Gerstein provides a great list of books that you could use to teach children about the skills and attributes that they need to learn. She states " Children’s books, as they are written and presented as stories, have great potential to explain these often abstract concepts.  There is also evidence that the brain processes stories differently and more powerfully than facts and lectures."

The stories are divided into sections:

* Grit

* Resilience

* Hope & Optimism

* Vision

* Self-Regulation

* Empathy & Global Awareness

There is also a list of books suggested by Tony Wagner in the areas of Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration and Curiosity and Imagination.

Although geared to children some are appropriate for older students.

Across Australia some of these ideas are being put into practice. Some schools have dropped the notion of year levels to enable them to meet children at their point of need and acknowledge that not all students learn at the same pace.

Computer programs are enabling instruction tailored to the student by assessing where they are at and providing a tailored curriculum.

Capabilities , such as personal and social capability and critical and creative thinking, are being embedded in the curriculum. Work is under way to develop assessment measures. Teachers across Australia are working on developing new models of practice to support this approach.

We need to accelerate the change. We are wasting too much of students’ learning time and are failing to amplify their talents. To continue along the current path is increasingly unscientific, unjustifiable and plain dull.

Recently, I learned that he's also publishing many of the PowerPoint presentations that appear in his videos. From his PowerPoint page you can download any of Tom's dozens of presentations on US History, European History, or World History. Tom also offers a couple of presentations on US Government.

In the report ‘New Vision for Education: Fostering Social and Emotional Learning through Technology', the World Economic Forum explores how "character qualities" such as collaboration, communication and critical thinking will equip students to succeed in the swiftly evolving digital economy.

To thrive in the 21st century, students need more than traditional academic learning. They must be adept at collaboration, communication and problem-solving, which are some of the skills developed through social and emotional learning (SEL).

In 2015, the World Economic Forum (WEF) published the report New Vision for Education: Unlocking the Potential of Technology that focused on the pressing issue of the 21st-century skills gap and ways to address it through technology. In that report, WEF defined a set of 16 crucial proficiencies for education. Of those skills, 10 were labelled either “competencies” or “character qualities”. Competencies are the means by which students approach complex challenges; they include collaboration, communication and critical thinking and problem-solving. Character qualities are the ways in which students approach their changing environment; they include curiosity, adaptability and social and cultural awareness.

Mientras que los MOOCs que ofrecen créditos se han convertido en una práctica usual en el sistema de Educación Superior de Estados Unidos, en el Reino Unido, hasta ahora, solamente eran acreedores de un certificado básico de participación. Las instituciones universitarias que han incorporado los MOOCs a su sistema de reconocimiento de créditos son la Universidad de Leeds,  miembro del prestigioso Grupo Russell de universidades, y la Open University, que se especializa en la enseñanza a distancia y abierta para los cursos y titulaciones de grado y postgrado.
