5 Ideas for Spreading OER | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

What's the best way to get people moving in the right direction with open educational resources?  "We always say that adopting OER is an all-college effort," declared Una Daly, community college outreach director for the Open Education Consortium.

According to the ancient Greeks, humans received the gift of fire from the Titan, Prometheus. Paleoanthropologists have unearthed evidence that our early ancestor, homo erectus, was able to control fire around 400,000 years ago.

Why open access should be a key issue for university leaders

Why open access should be a key issue for university leaders | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

Universities are digital machines these days. But many of the decisions that have to be made as a result are not technical at all. They are about the nature of research and its public benefits, about how learning and teaching takes place, and how we confront difficult ethical issues. Strategic choices that are made now will have significant implications for the ways in which knowledge will be created and shared in the future.

Three reasons college textbook prices are out of control

Three reasons college textbook prices are out of control | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

The price of college textbooks has risen almost as quickly as the price of college tuition. Experts say that prices rise for several reasons, including the fact that the professors assigning the books don't have to actually pay for them. But high prices are also the product of the textbook industry itself, and there are few obvious solutions in sight.

e4innovation.com » Blog Archive » Disruptive innovation and the emergence of the PLE+ | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

I am currently in Kuala Lumpur doing a keynote at the 5th International Personal Learning Environment (PLE) conference. The focus of my talk is on the notion of ‘PLE+’, i.e. I want to argue that we are entering a third phase of learning environments; the first are Virtual Learning Environments (where tools are provided by the institutional system, and where the teacher chooses which are used for their courses), the second are Personal Learning Environments (where learners create their own learning space, mixing and matching institutional tools with cloud-based tools).

The rise and rise of Creative Commons: Over 1.2M CC Licensed Scholarly Articles | PLOS Opens | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

We thought it might be useful to get some data on just how many CC licensed peer reviewed articles are out there. This turns out to be a non-trivial exercise but I think it’s feasible to come up with a reasonable lower bound. The too-long didn’t-read version: there are at least 1.2M CC licensed scholarly articles in the wild, with over 720,000 of them being licensed CC BY.

OER beyond voluntarism (essay)

OER beyond voluntarism (essay) | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

The dominion of open educational resources is apparently looming large, if one were to judge by a blog thread touched off with a panel discussion at a recent Knewton event. David Wiley, participating in the panel, made the bold claim that “in the near future, 80 percent of textbooks would be replaced by OER content.” Jose Ferreira responded critically to that view a few days later with a blog post, to which Wiley offered a dissenting reply. Michael Feldstein then weighed in with a dissenting perspective of his own.

Open Textbook Tweet: Driving Awareness and Adoption of Open Textbooks. Sharyn Fitzpatrick

Open Textbook Tweet: Driving Awareness and Adoption of Open Textbooks. Sharyn Fitzpatrick | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

Mark Twain remarked that he could never “make a good impromptu speech without several hours to prepare it.” A tweet, restricted to 140 characters, is a reflection of the impromptu conscience of digital society today. This collection of micro contributions from educators, administrators, and learners reflecting on the burgeoning phenomenon of open education resources and open textbooks is reason to celebrate: we are returning to the core vocation of education, which is to share knowledge freely. Clearly these contributors have thought deeply about the value of “sharing to learn,” but more importantly “learning to share.”

University research: if you believe in openness, stand up for it

University research: if you believe in openness, stand up for it | Educación Abierta | Scoop.it

Publishing openly provides greater exposure, boosts prospects and can lead to more citations, says Erin McKiernan

We spend years teaching our children to share. Yet from the moment students enter academia, we discourage it. Lock up your work in prestigious subscription journals; keep your data close to your chest; compete instead of collaborate – these are the messages transmitted by peers and mentors. These are the tenets of our unhealthy academic culture. We need to change our priorities.

Open Education = Open Research?  Research behind the paywall vs research delivered by keyword search on Google or Bing?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 24, 10:50 PM

Sharing our research is important, but forgoing vigor in publishing could be problematic. For example, what makes an open source published article strong? There is a a need to explore something different that allows publication, openness, and vigor.
