If you think data—in education, or any field—is cut and dry, think again. Working with data in the classroom, especially, can be either exhausting or exhilarating—depending on your fitness level.

Thinking Critically through Digital Media

Thinking Critically through Digital Media | Educação&Web | Scoop.it

In a world where anyone with an internet connection can access, create and share information, opinions and beliefs, it has become increasingly important that students are not only able to assess the credibility of sources but also to look more deeply at the underlying motivations, beliefs and bias of the creator.
Thinking Critically through Digital Media enables teachers to use authentic materials and digital tools combined with motivating communicative tasks to develop students’ abilities to function as critical and well informed digital citizens.

Fundamentos del proceso educativo a distancia: enseñanza, aprendizaje y evaluación

Fundamentos del proceso educativo a distancia: enseñanza, aprendizaje y evaluación | Educação&Web | Scoop.it

The benefits of creating a website for your classroom

The benefits of creating a website for your classroom | Educação&Web | Scoop.it
If creating a classroom website remains at the low end of your priority list, it’s understandable. Maybe you have been thinking about building one for a long time, but who has the time? Unfortunately, classroom websites take the backseat far too often. Either the website is too complicated to update on a regular basis and ends up being neglected, or perhaps you’re underwhelmed by the district issued site. Maybe it’s just a little too boring and not an accurate or interesting reflection of you, as a teacher. Before you brush off the idea of creating a website, take a brief moment to consider how it can benefit you, your students, and your class as a whole.

Yeison Ossa Trejos's curator insight, September 9, 2016 5:21 PM
As teachers, it can be a bit difficult to deal with the unlimited number of technological tools and resources that come up everyday. However, if we spend time selecting and learning how to use those that we consider can best fit our educational needs, it will certainly pay off. Among the hundreds or even thousands of digital tools available for teachers on the web, a website may be of great help. Creating your own site may have benefits your students, their parents and for yourself. Personally, I believe that a 21st century teacher must be skillful enough to handle technology and to integrate it into his professional field so that both learning and teaching processes can be successfully addressed in a ever-growing digital era.

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology

12 Tips for training older teachers to use technology | Educação&Web | Scoop.it
There is an assumption that persists in the educational community that more mature teachers are much more difficult and reluctant to be trained on the effective use of educational technology. To some degree, I think this assumption has been built on by the digital native vs digital immigrant myth. But as someone who has trained teachers of all ages all over the world I would say that, from my own experience, this hasn’t been the case.

UK: Why media literacy is a zombie policy

UK: Why media literacy is a zombie policy | Educação&Web | Scoop.it
There’s something reminiscent of the zombie in the UK’s policy for education about media.  To the surprise of many, media literacy is enshrined in law (Communications Act 2003), and Ofcom has a statutory responsibility to ‘promote’ it.  But media literacy as imagined by the policy makers who put it into statute, is long dead.  The stalking corpse that is occasionally identified as such, is likely to be one of a rag-bag of policy priorities that have, from time to time, inhabited and reanimated the cadaver.

This is the conclusion that David Buckingham (Loughborough University) and I have come to after an extensive examination of media literacy policy in the UK since the end of the last century.

Is Education Technology Losing Its Humanity? (EdSurge News)

Is Education Technology Losing Its Humanity? (EdSurge News) | Educação&Web | Scoop.it
Emerging technology today departs from my previous vision of improving the human condition. Through AI/Machine Learning, we are constantly hearing that technology is becoming more human and becoming more capable of judgements that we once thought were our domain. In education though, the opposite is happening: educational technology is not becoming more human; it is making the human a technology. Instead of improving teaching and learning, today’s technology re-writes teaching and learning to function according to a very narrow spectrum of single, de-contextualized skills.

Really excellent article by George Siemens and a must read for anyone involved in developing edtech. Especially important the five points of his framework.

1. Does the technology foster creativity and personal expression?
2. Does the technology develop the learner and contribute to her formation as a person?
3. Is the technology fun and engaging?
4. Does the technology have the human teacher and/or peer learners at the centre?
5. Does the technology consider the whole learner?

Santos Arturo Gamez's curator insight, October 16, 2015 4:15 PM

Is it that we are creating machines instead of humans with the use of technology in education?  How are students learning from their end of the screen?  These questions emerge when the learners are being taught technology and not educational material.  The transitional shift should also help adapt the learners to pedagogical strategies, applying them with skills and making it more humanized.
