Cyndi Danner-Kuhn's curator insight, June 25, 2013 6:47 AM

The role of technology in learning isn’t entirely clear–or rather, is subjective.

While it clearly is able to provide access to peers, audiences, resources, and data, it also can be awkward, problematic, distracting, performing more strongly as a barrier to understand than anything else.

Why this happens also isn’t clear, but there are some common patterns and missteps to look for while designing or evaluating a learning process.

15 Mistakes You’re Probably Making With Technology In Learning

1. You’re choosing the technology.

Is Education Technology Losing Its Humanity? (EdSurge News)

Is Education Technology Losing Its Humanity? (EdSurge News) | Educação&Web | Scoop.it
Emerging technology today departs from my previous vision of improving the human condition. Through AI/Machine Learning, we are constantly hearing that technology is becoming more human and becoming more capable of judgements that we once thought were our domain. In education though, the opposite is happening: educational technology is not becoming more human; it is making the human a technology. Instead of improving teaching and learning, today’s technology re-writes teaching and learning to function according to a very narrow spectrum of single, de-contextualized skills.

Nik Peachey's curator insight, October 10, 2015 1:05 AM

Really excellent article by George Siemens and a must read for anyone involved in developing edtech. Especially important the five points of his framework.

1. Does the technology foster creativity and personal expression?
2. Does the technology develop the learner and contribute to her formation as a person?
3. Is the technology fun and engaging?
4. Does the technology have the human teacher and/or peer learners at the centre?
5. Does the technology consider the whole learner?

Santos Arturo Gamez's curator insight, October 16, 2015 4:15 PM

Is it that we are creating machines instead of humans with the use of technology in education?  How are students learning from their end of the screen?  These questions emerge when the learners are being taught technology and not educational material.  The transitional shift should also help adapt the learners to pedagogical strategies, applying them with skills and making it more humanized.

Who creates trends in online social media: The crowd or opinion leaders?

Who creates trends in online social media: The crowd or opinion leaders? | Educação&Web | Scoop.it
Internet slang words can very quickly become ubiquitous because of social memes and viral online content. Weibo, a Twitter-like service in China, demonstrates that the adoption of popular Internet slang undergoes 2 distinct peaks in its temporal evolution, in which the former is relatively much lower than the latter. An in-depth comparison of the diffusion of these different peaks suggests that popular attention in the early stage of propagation results in large-scale coverage, while the participation of opinion leaders at the early stage only leads to minor popularity. Our empirical results question the conventional influentials hypothesis and provide some insights for marketing practice and influence maximization in social networks.

ICTE Solutions Australia's curator insight, December 28, 2015 11:43 PM

In an ICT integrated society, it is important that people are information literate. That means being able to search for and analyse information for their benefits. As websites on the Internet become more popular teachers need to teach their students the right skills and knowledge so that their students are able to become information literate. Any guide therefore, that will assist teachers in doing so is worth using as a resource as reference for both teachers and students to use.

Why We Shouldn't Fear Technology in the Classroom

Technology in the classroom doesn't have to be something from a teacher's nightmare. Here's how to ease into it and make it work in your classroom.

Shelly Reckow VanVoorst's curator insight, October 24, 2015 10:26 PM

I scooped this article because it pertains to all schools and classrooms, especially as we move forward, and outside pressure mount to provide students with newer technology.  The article outlines some of the common fears, as well as ones that most educators won't admit to, such as fear of not being able to learn the new technology and utilizing it correctly in the classroom.  I hope that educators within my district read this and realize that as administrators we are aware of these concerns and we are working towards elevating the concerns so that educators can be successful in the classrooms.

Manuela Mejia's curator insight, August 19, 11:02 PM
I consider that the first step to include technologycal devices and tools in the classroom, is to identify those aspects mentioned in this article. The next step is to search for tools and strategies that help teachers to deal with those problems. English language teachers in Colombia not only need to change the traditional teaching method, we also need to change the type of output that we provide. Thus, teaching and technology will be in the same path.
