Children and parents: media use and attitudes report 2016

Children and parents: media use and attitudes report 2016  | Educação e competências | Scoop.it

This report examines children’s media literacy. It provides detailed evidence on media use, attitudes and understanding among children and young people aged 5-15, as well as detailed information about the media access and use of young children aged 3-4. The report also includes findings relating to parents’ views about their children’s media use, and the ways that parents seek – or decide not – to monitor or limit use of different types of media."

An interview with Maya Angelou.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, May 29, 2014 10:55 AM

I was so sad yesterday when I heard about Maya Angelou's passing. I've always enjoyed reading and watching her. From her I always learned more about humanity, dignity, courage, and character.

When I found this HBR post yesterday of an interview with her, I was delighted. The interviewer/author Alison Beard even talks with Maya about business storytelling. The interview is quintessential Angelou and I know you'll enjoy it.

There is a little-known book in my library that I treasure for its wisdom -- Facing Evil; Light at the Core of Darkness (1989) -- that Maya (and many other amazing people) contributed to. Some of my favorite passages from her essay are, "We must remember the great struggle between majestic forces -- that that struggle introduces a dynamic into our intellect and into our souls. We are required to develop courage to care...We need the courage to create ourselves daily, to be bodacious enough to create ourselves daily as Christians, as Jews, as Muslims, as thinking, caring, laughing, loving human beings. (pg 29) Now wherever that lives in us--whether it's in the bend of the elbow, behind the kneecap--wherever that lives, there dwells the nobleness in the human spirit. Not nobility. I don't trust the word. I think it's pompous. But the nobleness is in the human spirit. It is seen in the fact that we rise to good, we do rise."

Angelou's view of story was in its power to unite. The end of her poem "Human Family" says, "We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike." (from I Shall Not Be Moved)

Enjoy this article honoring one great lady, and the inspiration that lies waiting for you.

What about the seven wonders of the world, the seven seas, the seven deadly sins, the seven daughters of Atlas in the Pleiades, the seven ages of man, the seven levels of hell, the seven primary colors, the seven notes of the musical scale, and the seven days of the week? What about the seven-point rating scale, the seven categories for absolute judgment, the seven objects in the span of attention, and the seven digits in the span of immediate memory? (George A. How to Teach Expository Text Structure to Facilitate Reading Comprehension

How to Teach Expository Text Structure to Facilitate Reading Comprehension | Educação e competências | Scoop.it
Over the past 60 years, reading comprehension has changed its emphasis from the mastery of skills and subskills that are learned by rote and automatized to a focus on learning strategies, which are adaptable, flexible, and, most important, in the control of the reader (Dole, Duffy, Roehler, & Pearson, 1991). One of the most efficient strategies for which there is an influx of research and practice is training students on text structure knowledge to facilitate their comprehension of the expositor

Story and Brand Is a Way of Being: 5 Secrets To Engage Consumers

Story and Brand Is a Way of Being: 5 Secrets To Engage Consumers | Educação e competências | Scoop.it
This new class of shoppers cares about style, status, and doing right by the planet. Here's how to reach them.

Via Karen Dietz

Karen Dietz's curator insight, May 26, 2014 2:10 PM

This article by Mitch Baranowski and Raphael Bemporad is all about the extent of aspirational consumers and how to reach them. This has huge implications for both branding and storytelling -- because they are the largest consumer segment globally.

What is the biggest implication? Branding is not a tool for marketing. Storytelling is not a tool for branding. Instead, both are ways of being. As the authors say, "What’s new here is that Aspirationals don’t want flat, empty statements conveyed in slick ad campaigns. They want brands to embody a deeper purpose." The authors provide links to research plus provide examples.

Storytelling is the way to communicate deeper purpose, vision, values, and beliefs. Story is the way these come alive. Story is the way companies embody them -- it's the ability to walk your talk.

That being said, the 5 ways offered here to engage aspirational consumers all involve storytelling -- your stories give them something to believe in, build a shared story they want to belong to, you can share their stories as a way to amplify their voices plus give them social status, and the body of stories forms a platform for action.

So get your story on and connect better with this increasingly powerful consumer segment that is only going to grow.

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, January 6, 2014 6:01 PM

Teachers can start using Hangouts simply by setting up a Google+ page and signing up for the Hangout feature. They can conduct virtual classrooms at a number of places; it allows a teacher to teach up to 10 classrooms at the same time. It makes classes interactive and students can ask questions whenever they want. They can use it to connect their classroom with other classrooms or to connect their students with experts across the world, providing them with connected learning experiences. There are many ways in which teachers and students can derive benefits from using Hangouts in the classroom.
