The debate over STEM or STEAM, while intense, only marks the beginning of what needs to happen in education.

I bought Diane Ravitch's book 'Eduspeak' to show the teacher and administrators with whom I worked what those outside education feel vocabulary/terminology.

Definitely worth the read and a good discussion.

'STEAM' Education Gains Momentum in Schools

'STEAM' Education Gains Momentum in Schools | education | Scoop.it

by Laura Devaney, eSchool News

For years, educators have been told about the importance of STEM education in ensuring the nation’s competitiveness in a global economy. Now, a new movement seeks to amend that acronym to “STEAM”—with an “A” for the arts.

Digital Storytelling in Math? Yes Please! | MathCoachBlog | education | Scoop.it

At last week’s STEM Institute, Hall Davidson from Discovery Education facilitated two outstanding sessions on digital storytelling and apps for education, “Putting the STEAM in STEM”. How can we encourage students in the sciences to tell a story? Hall offers that storytelling in the sciences should follow a similar structure to all great stories: Setup – Conflict – Challenge – Climax – Resolution.

Here are some tools which will help you and your students tell your own story:

- PhotoStory

- MovieMaker

- PhotoPeach

- ActionMovie

From STEM to STEAM

From STEM to STEAM | education | Scoop.it

This SCUP regional conference was held at RPI in November 2010. The full program PDF can be downloaded here.

"There are those who argue that it would be shortsighted to focus enhanced resources on just STEM programs without including the arts in the mix, changing the acronym from STEM to STEAM. Writing in the March 10, 2010 edition of Education Week, Joseph Piro, an associate professor of curriculum and instruction in the school of education at Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus, noted, 'If creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking – all touted as hallmark skills for 21st- century success - are to be cultivated, we need to ensure that STEM subjects are drawn closer to the arts.'

Perhaps no other national university has embraced both STEM and STEAM initiatives as has Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, New York, our host for the conference. Our keynote speaker will be the honorable Shirley Ann Jackson, PhD, president of Rensselaer since 1999. Described by Time Magazine (2005) as “perhaps the ultimate role model for women in science,” Jackson has been in the forefront of leaders stressing the need for more funding to address what she has termed a “quiet crisis.”

“Describing her as ‘a national treasure,’ the National Science Board selected Jackson as its 2007 recipient of the prestigious Vannevar Bush Award for ‘a lifetime of achievements in scientific research, education, and senior statesman-like contributions to public policy.’” Jackson served as the chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1995–1999 under President William Clinton. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed her to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Jackson is a life member of the M.I.T. Corporation (Board of Trustees) and a director of several charitable and corporate boards.

"Over the summer, I have been blogging about Redefining Learning in the Mathematics Classroom through the use of individual student blogs. After hearing about the great things going on in Kristen Wideen’s classroom and her use of QuadBlogging for creating a Primary Blogging Community, I have been inspired to attempt modifying a similar approach for blogging in mathematics."

Jennifer Callaway's curator insight, December 13, 2013 1:20 PM

So this was directed for older students, but I can definitely see myself using this in the classroom. I would love to maybe choose a daily scribe and a student would be in charge of explaining a strategy they learned or a problem they solved and what they did that we could post to a classroom blog. I could even do this as a center where students have a problem that they can solve and explain and I'd post it to a classroom blog. Students would have access to this at home and could even use it as support if they need to remember a strategy for their homework.
