Popcorn Maker: A Dead-Simple Drag-and-Drop App For Remixing Web Videos

Popcorn Maker: A Dead-Simple Drag-and-Drop App For Remixing Web Videos | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
About a year ago, I wrote about an "HTML5 media framework" called Popcorn.js that let filmmakers build online interactivity right into their web videos. The trouble was that you needed to be (or know or hire) a coding ninja in order to use it.

The article goeson to state that Popcorn Maker, put out by the Mozilla Foundation, is the "Final Cut Pro of online interactive video -- a pofessional-grade tool for creating world-class multimedia experieces from scratch -- Popcorn Maker is more like iMovie."

To use it you have to grab online media (think YouTube and Vimeo for video, and SoundCloud for audio) and then use the interactive widgets available. Have fun experimenting!

This free course can teach you music programming basics in less than an hour

This free course can teach you music programming basics in less than an hour | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
Ableton, A Berlin-based music software company, just released a free interactive music course that runs right in your browser.
One thing that immediately struck me about their web app was how well it was built. For example, if you change the tab, the music will fade out, then fade back in when you return. And if you start one sequencer, then scroll down and start another sequencer, it will automatically pause the first one.
It also has fun, easy to understand interfaces for programming music.

We Need More Repair Cafés | Make:

We Need More Repair Cafés | Make: | Edu Technology | Scoop.it

"I have to admit that, before a friend posted this video to my Facebook wall, I had never heard of repair cafés. I had no idea this was a trend, but I’m thrilled that it is.

I immediately thought of several appliances and motorized tools that I would love to repair, but I’m too clueless to troubleshoot and fix what may be wrong with them. If I could take them to one of these repair cafés and work with someone who knows what they’re doing, I would get these devices fixed, learn more about them, and how to maintain and fix them in the future. I would also be supporting a local makery endeavour and the so-called “perennial philosophy” (trying to keep the material objects in your life alive for as long as possible). Pure win!"

Training Wheels: From Replicator to Maker

Training Wheels: From Replicator to Maker | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
As enthusiastic as I am about makerspaces in education, at some point, we have to take the training wheels off. There are thousands of maker products on the market that come with project guides, activity kits, and curriculum guides. And that is wonderful! But we’re forgetting that those guides and kits are just TRAINING WHEELS. They were just meant to give you the foundation skills and confidence needed to take it to the next level. So what is the next level, you ask? YOU TELL ME.

That is the whole idea of the maker movement and sometimes I feel we are totally missing it.
