Richard Byrne posted this resource and it is definitely worth checking it out. The site was founded in 2008 to "help teachers meet the nationwide crisis in reading comprehension. The goal is to "help teachers improve their effectiveness through research-based, classroom-proven practices and  curriculum."

From their website: ReadWorks provides research-based curriculum and guidance directly to teachers and principals, online, for free, to be shared broadly. To go directly to the site: http://www.readworks.org.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 18, 2013 7:38 PM

Tynker is another new coding program designed for children that is free. Their philosophy is "that elementary school-aged children should understand the basics of how computers work and how they’re programmed." They have designed their own programming language which is "focused on bringing better STEM education tools into classrooms and is hence geared toward teachers." All the tools are free to use and include lesson plans and interactive tutorials as well as management tools. Projects are geared to student interests, such as buiding games, robots and creating comics.

Cath Parker's curator insight, April 21, 2013 2:34 AM

The modular tools used for programming here look very similar to those developed by MIT for their programme, "Scatch".  It am looking for award to trying Tynker out with my Year 2 students as they really enjoyed working with Scratch to create their own games.

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, May 10, 2013 8:43 PM

This is another coding platform that is free for now. This is designed for children to learn to code.

This is really addictive and could have lots of great uses in different subject areas. Follow clues on Google Maps to find different locations. Clues can be set at different Zooms and on different terrain features.

You can set your own private class area and scores.

An easy way to find out what sticks out on your website and what people remember. Fantastic free tool.

gideonwilliams's curator insight, April 8, 2013 1:00 PM

This could work well when evaluating students websites or pretty much anything with a visible URL?

Once made they send this link around and see what key features other students write down. They could compare the answers with their initial aims?

Education game invokes Civilization and others to teach math

The educational technology company uses game concepts to engage students while learning and targeting their weak areas in math.

Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 10, 2013 10:25 PM

Students often struggle with algebra. KnowRe is providing a free Algebra 1 game (in beta) that helps students review and learn math. This post provides an overview of KnowRe and states it is a "teaching tool that adapts to students on a personal level. It learns how well each person is understanding the concepts and adapts the curriculum based on that information."

You will also find a short video that shows how to use KnowRe and explains the components of the program.

To go directly to the KnowRe website, which bills itself as "Personalized math learning designed to help students succeed" go to https://www.knowre.com/. ;

Zhendan (Max) Wang's curator insight, April 11, 2013 3:05 PM

That's brilliant. if education could be implanted into games. everybody would be so happy to learn.

Alexis's curator insight, October 3, 2013 10:17 AM

This game understands students on a personal level. It adapts to their needs and teaches math at their speed. Its a great teaching tool and targets a "trouble area" for each student so they can work on their own pace. I could definitely see myself using this in the classroom.

Presenting... the Digital Public Library of America!

Presenting... the Digital Public Library of America! | Edu Tech Resources | Scoop.it

"Two-and-a-half years ago, at a meeting in Cambridge, leaders of 42 of America's top libraries and research institutions decided that the time had come to buildsomething together. But what was that thing?" And "that thing" is now launched... the Digital Public Libary of America!

Via Beth Dichter
more...
Beth Dichter's curator insight, April 19, 2013 9:15 PM

The library director answers three questions about this new venture:

* What is the Digital Public Library of America? What do you hope it will become?

* Can you give us examples of collections or items that are part of the DPLA that people can look forward to exploring?

* Can you talk about how the Digital Public Library of America fits in with the role of libraries going forward in the 21st century?

Think about it. Forty-two institutions have come together to share their materials online. The library will have exhibits and allow you to search by location, time and keyword. You can create an account and save your searches (and they may be public or private). This is a new resource that will allow you and your students to find primary documents and artifacts that otherwise would not be available to them. Take the time to check it out. The site is located at http://dp.la.
