Thomas salmon's insight:

Are OERs really the same thing here as a MOOC? It seems to me that there is a slight problem of definition. Certain kinds of MOOCs (EdX and Udacity) can perform implicit marketing and quality assurance functions for courses that otherwise are commercially high value products. On the otherhand other OER's may simply be repositories of intentionally open data, which are designed to be accessed quite differently from sample units from Harvard or MIT.

A Simple Guide To 4 Complex Learning Theories - Edudemic

A Simple Guide To 4 Complex Learning Theories - Edudemic | Edu Tech For Development | Scoop.it
Do you know the actual theories of learning? A learning theory is an attempt to describe how people learn, helping us understand this inherently complex process.

Via Beth Dichter
Thomas salmon's insight:

Some simplification here in order to try to make things fit into buckets but still interesting :)

Beth Dichter's curator insight, December 26, 2012 11:19 PM

This infographic explores three traditional learing theories: Behaviorism, Constructiorism (which I know as constructivism), Cognitivism; and a learning theory of the digital age: Connectivism. As well as providing a list of theorists the infographic also shows how learning occurs, influencing factors, the role of memory, how transfer occurs, a brief way to explain each type of learning, beneifits and problems as well as several ways to look at the theories as a whole.

Why (Digital) Education is the new eCommerce

Why (Digital) Education is the new eCommerce | Edu Tech For Development | Scoop.it
At CAGR 13.5% global eCommerce industry will stand at $ 3.25T in 2022. Which means digital education will be 34.67% bigger than eCommerce in 2022. Even if only 37% of education moves online in next ten years it will equal eCommerce.
Thomas salmon's insight:

Predictions about (digital) education overtaking ecommerce are likely to be claimed ever more readily, but isn't it really just a form of ecommerce in services which in fact would be a corporate form of what we call education without those tentative parentheses eg. Digital Education TM rather than (digital) education?

Knowledge work is broken - can social fix it?

Knowledge work is broken - can social fix it? Presentation from Social Business Forum 2012 in Milan, Italy.

Knowledge workers spend from 15% to 35% of their time searching for information.15% of the time is spent on duplicating existing information.

The effective usage rates of enterprise software are down compared to two years ago, with users experiencing productivity losses of around 17%.It’s like giving everyone Friday off.

As work is being distributed across locations and organizations, current digital work environments - primarily designed for personal productivity - make people more isolated and less aware of what is happening at work. It cripples their ability to collaborate and be productive.

Via plerudulier, David Hain, Lynnette Van Dyke
Thomas salmon's insight:

Is the growing gap between skills via education and those required for work also partly related to this gap that exists in the workplace between digital distribution and barriers to collaboration and productivity? It seems logical that knowledge workers who have learned to work in smarter and more social ways online will be those that are both 'hooked in' and also educated from the start in more team based and participatory environments.
