A Beginner’s Guide To Setting Up An eBook Library On Your iPad

A Beginner’s Guide To Setting Up An eBook Library On Your iPad | EdTechSharing | Scoop.it
The recently announced iPad mini, along with similar digital tablets like the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 make for nearly perfect e-reading devices.

Building an e-library is ten times easier than building and maintaining a paper book library.

So after you’ve purchased your iPad, you will want to install at least two e-book reading apps on your device: the iBooks Reader and the Kindle for the iPad. Both are free downloads.

This beginner’s guide recommends apps and features to get you started in building your library. Though the focus on is on the iPad, because it’s the device used for the last two years to build an e-library, the recommendations apply to other devices, including the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Nobel Nook. But the iPad offers some extra features that you will eventually find useful over other devices.

myliblog: Writers support libraries

myliblog: Writers support libraries | EdTechSharing | Scoop.it

Here's what a lot of people don't know. I didn't. Modern author contracts call for an author royalty of 10% or so for sales. But for licensing, authors are supposed to get 50%. So you have to wonder: is Random House licensing their works, but taking 90%, when they should only get 50?

Somehow, this copyright and publishing framework has become a corporate asset, benefitting neither the public, nor the creator.

Calling all authors: why not publish at the library? We'll give you 90%.

Make the Internet Accessible with Google Chrome

Make the Internet Accessible with Google Chrome | EdTechSharing | Scoop.it

If you are looking for a browser that provides accessible features check out Google Chrome, specifically the "many add-ons available to facilitate access, as well as websites that have been designed to take advantage of features built into Chrome." Once again Paul Hamilton has pulled together a variety of add-ons, both Chrome extensions and apps. All are free from the Chrome Web Store. Some examples of extensions and apps discussed include SpeakIt!, which provides text-to-speech for reading web content; Voice Search, which allows you to speak your search terms (and works with multiple search engines); and Chrome Vis, which allows you do magnify and change the color of text as well as view the text selected inside a separate lens. An additional five add-ons are listed with links to the add-ons and in some cases additional information. Please note "You need a Google (GMail) acccount to install an app."
