The Four Phases of Effective eLearning: an Indispensable Guide for Instructors

The Four Phases of Effective eLearning: an Indispensable Guide for Instructors | EdTechMatters | Scoop.it

"Learning starts with real-world problems. Students should be able to relate to problems and tasks they can handle. Many course developers are guilty of introducing learners to problems that are either irrelevant or too complex. Try to avoid this by starting with a simple problem and moving towards complex yet manageable tasks. Also, make sure that students see tangible benefits from having these problems solved. Consider these questions when you create activities surrounding the problem."

When the focus of technology is on the teacher and teaching not learners and learning, it is easy to see EdTech as a failure: a waste of time, money, and resources. For many of us, we’ve argued for a move away from teacher-centered only to find a movement and investment in EdTech that is the antithesis of such a movement. We’ve simply added teacher-centered technology to teacher-centered classrooms.

The Six Ingredients That Make eLearning Courses Relevant

The Six Ingredients That Make eLearning Courses Relevant | EdTechMatters | Scoop.it

"In eLearning, creating relevant and meaningful experiences for your target audience has always been the best way to capture learners. On the contrary, if your learners have no interest in your course, the information you have sent will convey very little value and success... Much experience through trials of eLearning has identified the best way to teach students is to focus on the relevance of course material; too much theory that extends beyond the tasks they will actually be responsible for confusing the situation, or at the very least, retarding the utility of the course. When time is a premium - which it always is - the best eLearning courses make sure that the instruction that follows is directly applicable to the subsequent tasks."

Technology is a TOOL, not a goal. Just because students learned before the invention of TV doesn't mean education can't be improved. While it can be annoying to jump on every new gimmick, it's just as annoying to be resistant to trying anything new.
