Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, June 1, 2014 5:05 PM

As a noun, technology is a tool. As a verb, it is the study and artful use of the tools which is an ongoing process. If we only use a hammer, then everything looks like a nail. Students and teachers live, learn, and lead in the context which all tools are being used. The "tech leaders" I experienced were/are outside the classroom.

Opinion piece "behind the façade" of CTA's new compaign. At a recent union meeting I witnessed the effort from an official to hold the party line and claim that wealthy entrepreneurs are trying to steal public funds. Maybe, just maybe, wealthy union bosses are taking millions from teachers that could be going into edtech or some other good cause.

What the Heck Is All the Whoop-Dee-Do With 3D Printing? - Edutopia #makered | EdTech Innovations | Scoop.it
Now, I've never been one to caress a new Apple product in admiration of its beauty. I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even know how to change a tire. I've always been a Shakespeare geek, moved to tears by words, and moved to tears by having to hang a leveled picture in my hallway.

Cut to three years later, and I have my first 3D printer and have just pitched my district for four more for next year. My friends, I have drunk the Kool-Aid.

Skellig Michael: An Island Far, Far Away

Skellig Michael: An Island Far, Far Away | EdTech Innovations | Scoop.it

"Star Wars Epiosde VII was filmed on Skellig Michael island in Ireland. What better place to depict an ancient, mystical, martial asceticism in a galaxy far, far away than an actual ancient eremitic settlement, dripping with stone-cold monastic austerity, located at what was for centuries the very ends of the earth, seven miles off the very tip of a western Irish peninsula?"

Skellig Michael is sure to become a more common geographical interest since the success of Star Wars.

This island is dripping with geologic, biogeographical, and religious intrigue that makes this world heritage site a place that is shrouded in mystery.  This article from JSTOR Daily is a great introduction to the island for the incurably curious.  The already vibrant tourism industry is bound to increase after Star Wars used this incredible location in the recent film (much like New Zealand experienced a huge spike in tourism after the Lord the Rings films).  Filmmakers understand the power of place to deepen the narrative; they frequently situate their stories in a geographic context that will heighten the emotional impact of the story.  For more on the dramatic locations of Star Wars filming sites, see this article by National Geographic

Project-Based Learning: Taking Students to a Deeper Level | Getting Smart

PBL brings excitement and enthusiasm into the classroom. It may bring some disruptiveness, but where you hear a buzz there's likely some learning going on. We're going into a PBL unit in TK soon and the students will likely not want to go home for the summer.

Alternatives to Student Presentations - @AliceKeeler

Alternatives to Student Presentations - @AliceKeeler | EdTech Innovations | Scoop.it
Let’s keep things interesting and mix things up! I’m a fan of focusing on the learning objective, not the assignment. Providing students choices for ways they can demonstrate their learning definitely keeps things interesting!! When we ask students to “create a presentation” or “make a brochure” you can almost hear the groaning in the room since they have made so many of them. I received a tweet asking for ideas for alternatives. A lot of great suggestions followed…
