I am on spring break this week. It has been such a luxury to linger over coffee and the newspaper in the mornings. That has been about all of the luxury I’ve been able to enjoy because even though I’m on spring break from my job, I am not on spring break from doctoral classes. I have been immersed in scholarly articles on early literacy. So, while this is all fresh on my mind, I am going to share a few work samples from some of our recent literacy activities on iPads.

Dweck’s latest research involves larger, more rigorous field trials that provide some of the first evidence that the social psychology strategy can be effective when implemented in institutions on a wide scale. Promising results from one famous experiment – an eight-session workshop in 91 seventh graders in a New York City school – led Dweck and Lisa Blackwell to start up Mindset Works, a company that offers a computer-based program called Brainology. Her current program, the Stanford Project for Education Research That Scales (PERTS), collaborates with schools in testing various experimental psychology strategies for shifting the ways students think about their education, so as to motivate them to work hard. PERTS plans to release an open set of growth-mindset professional development materials, starting with math teachers next year.
But you can start developing your own mindset–and those of your students–right now. Here’s our list of recommended practices.

This morning I had my first opportunity to use the iPad app Procreate to create visual notes, or sketchnotes. I added my two new creations to a small but growing album on Flickr which I started a couple years ago when I first discovered visual notetaking and wrote the “Visual Notetaking” chapter of Mapping Media to the Curriculum. My sketchnoting skills are still VERY primitive compared to gurus like Carol Anne McGuire, Amy Burvall and Giulia Forsythe. I know I’ll get better by practicing, however, and I’m embracing this opportunity to feel the inadequacy of “a beginner.” I believe in the value and power of visual notetaking for learning, understanding and communicating, and I want to “walk the walk” of someone who also believes in the importance of “playing with media!” Later this afternoon I created “narrated sketchnotes” with my drawings, using iMovie for iPad, since Procreate supports stop-motion style video exports of files. Since I was creating sketchnotes and narrated sketchnotes at Sunday School and during a sermon at our church, I shared these over on my Christian blog, “Eyes Right,” in the post, “Narrated SketchNotes on Romans 14 & Luke 14.”

Anyone who’s every listened to NPR is probably familiar with StoryCorps, and I’ve published several posts sharing their resources.

 

They just unveiled a new free mobile app at the TED Conference that allows anyone to record an interview with anyone and upload it their new site, StoryCorps.me. They have both iPhone and Android versions, and they’re great!


The app provides multiple suggestions for questions, depending on who you are interviewing (you can also add your own). It’s a perfect tool for having students interview their parents, grandparents or other older family members (which also makes it easy to ensure students have parental consent — by the way, their policy states users must be over 13). It’s super-simple to use. Of course, classmates could also interview others, as long as teachers had parental permission."

Have you ever noticed how, as leaders, we’re often far more sensitive to people’s weaknesses than we are to their strengths? And once we’ve targeted a weakness, do you ever notice how common it is for us to slide into problem-solving mode?

Lately, I’ve been experiencing daily reminders of how this inhibits us from recognizing what people are good at and helping them use their strengths to serve others. I’m reminded of this every time I watch a teacher slide into editing mode before she provides a learner narrative feedback.  I’m reminded of this every time I watch an administrator rush to make judgments about the observations gathered during a lesson study. And I’m reminded of this every time I listen as two people on opposite sides of an issue fail to practice active listening or check their confirmation bias.

He uses the term passion projects, which is very close to Genius Hour and Passion-Based Learning. The differences across the three terms are often a matter of individual use and interpretation, a point we wanted to help clarify by using the three terms interchangeably even though they may not be exactly the same–passion projects needn’t use a Genius Hour format, nor does passion-based learning necessarily need to take the form of projects. In that way, the above model can be used for any of the three, but it felt most precise as a model for teachers to use to design Genius Hour projects. So, here we are.
