digital divide is real

digital divide is real | EdTech Equity | Scoop.it
If you've been following my blog you'll know that I have often written about the concept/reality of a digital divide. I defined this and explored it in more detail in this video I created HERE.  I ...

J. Mark Schwanz's insight:

I experience the digital Grand Canyon every day. I've been to the great divide and see we are developing an ed. system where more students are in classrooms without access to technology, the internet, or an adequately trained teacher.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, May 10, 2014 1:02 PM

When teachers interact with students, they understand the use of digital technologies differently. It is no longer a research based concept where there is some mysterious average involved. Teachers are present to the lived usage of digital technologies in a practical way.

What has happened with digital technologies and, for that matter, any educational fad, is the "experts" from outside the classroom know more than teachers and they tell us so. These experts have little real sense of what is happening in any classroom let alone the particular classroom of a particular teacher. They are all about change, but do not know what the change is because they lack the direct experience.

Sesame Street was the original MOOC

Sesame Street was the original MOOC | EdTech Equity | Scoop.it
New research from Brookings Senior Fellow Melissa Kearney and Wellesley College’s Phillip Levine shows that children living in places where the broadcast signal for Sesame Street was strong were 14 percent less likely to be behind in school compared to children living in places with a weak signal reception.
J. Mark Schwanz's insight:

I hadn't made this connection, that Sesame Street could help bring better results to the MOOC learning world. For anyone who has taken a MOOC you would probably agree much could be done to make the experience more enjoyable. How far towards "entertainment" are we willing to go?

Technology won’t fix America’s neediest schools. It makes bad education worse. | EdTech Equity | Scoop.it
For teachers already struggling to keep their students engaged, a computer is more hindrance than help.
J. Mark Schwanz's insight:

Toyama uncovers in very simple terms the shadow behind all the tech promises. He clearly defines what we know to be born out in many urban schools where devices were promised to bring startling reforms. "Technology’s primary effect is to amplify human forces. In education, technologies amplify whatever pedagogical capacity is already there."

The white paper is linked for free download. It's important to note that it's funding is from the Gates Foundation. I agree that more research should have been down before MOOCs had the huge hype but let's affirm any organization that would fund reputable research into online and distance education. Very interesting that Duncan and co. are looking for more..."federal spending on early education, more resources for poor schools through Title I, more money for innovative approaches in education and a cap on statewide testing."

It just seems to me that new legislation is long overdue and that there are too many issues clouding the messaging, Common Core, testing, et. al. Dems and POTUS seek to couch the new legislation in terms of social justice and civil rights.
