Digital Learning and Higher Education
I research and publish on the impact of digital networks and technologies on the (public) institutions of higher education. While I am skeptical regarding predictions of rapid technology-driven disruption in the durable structures of what is essentially a non-profit venture, I do think academics and teachers can ill afford to lose touch with emerging digital forms and formats of interaction and communication.

U.S. Immigration Policy Is Heightening Syria's Education Crisis | The Atlantic | Digital Learning and Higher Education | Scoop.it
Thousands of Syrian students’ schooling is on pause, and though many would like to continue their learning in America, immigration policies make that all but impossible.

It is a joy to see our project "Ready for Study" mentioned as one attempt to cut across the institutional boundaries to offer motivated learners an opportunity for integration and advancement.

MOOCs at Five | Higher Education Strategy Blog

It was five years ago last month that Stanford set up the first MOOC. MOOCs were supposed to change the world: Udacity, Coursera and EdX were going to utterly transform education, putting many universities out of business. Time to see how that’s going.
ғelιх c ѕeyғarтн's insight:
A concise but by now familiar-seeming take-down of the #MOOC hype. I fundamentally disagree, however, with framing the failure of higher education to adopt valid (and valuable) digital formats as a "industry" that is "conservative" and driven by "prestige", but lacks a "business model". Remember: What passes for a "MOOC" these days (or even a "micro-MBA") is equivalent to the first iPod, in terms of the innovation cycle.

Why America’s MOOC pioneers have abandoned ship | Jonathan Rees [Blog]

Why America’s MOOC pioneers have abandoned ship | Jonathan Rees [Blog] | Digital Learning and Higher Education | Scoop.it
On November 7, 1872, the American ship Mary Celeste left New York Harbor en route to Genoa, Italy. On December 5, 1872, a British brig discovered that vessel drifting in turbulent seas about 400 mi…
ғelιх c ѕeyғarтн's insight:
Like every metaphor, the "abandoned ship" is limited in elucidating the state of MOOCs, but I agree with the notion of a faulty or outright missing business model. On the other hand, Rees does not go far enough in comparing (classroom) education with musical performance: While a live concert will most often (but not: always!) be superior to a musical recording - the latter does have certain advantages, and most certainly a (massive) market.

Oxford University to launch first MOOC | BBC News

Oxford University to launch first MOOC | BBC News | Digital Learning and Higher Education | Scoop.it
Oxford University announced its first "massive open online course" - or so-called Mooc - available to students anywhere in the world.
ғelιх c ѕeyғarтн's insight:
As Oxford U is getting ready to launch its first #MOOC on "Poverty & Economic Development"nearly eight years after the phenomenon became prominent, the BBC feels the need to paraphrase the "so-called Mooc" in the headline as an "online 'Mooc' course" to avoid any potential misunderstandings. Rumours of the format's death seem greatly exaggerated, I suppose.

MOOCs no longer massive, still attract millions

MOOCs no longer massive, still attract millions | Digital Learning and Higher Education | Scoop.it
The first ever MOOC I took had 160,000 people signed up for it.
ғelιх c ѕeyғarтн's insight:
While the drop in participation number per course was inevitable as the overall supply of MOOCs increased, the concomitant drop in interactivity is not inevitable but most likely a function of current technological implementation and instructional design (i.e. platforms, interfaces, learning experience, mentoring/feedback incentives). By and large, in this early stage of scalable EdTech development, MOOC are still a "virtualisation" of on-site course formats much more than "digitally native" learning formats that utilise the medium's potentials.
