Behaviors & Strategies for Improving Your Instructor Presence | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Establishing a connection with online learners is a demonstrated strategy for increasing student motivation in online classes (Jones, Kolloff & Kolloff, 2008) and a marker of instructor excellence (Palloff & Pratt, 2011). After a Disappointing 2016, Will Wearables Wither Further in 2017?

After a Disappointing 2016, Will Wearables Wither Further in 2017? | Higher Education | Scoop.it

2016 has not been a great year for the consumer wearables market (read “eMarketer Slashes Growth Outlook for Wearables - Only Early Adopters are Using Them”: http://sco.lt/6eaNbV). However, declaring wearables dead is a mistake.

First, the bad news.

During CES 2016, which took place in January, wearables were the star of the show, with numerous companies, including Pebble and Samsung, introducing new hardware. After the early success of the Apple Watch and steady increase in Fitbit’s sales, many were predicting a strong and growing demand for these devices.

However, throughout this year, the wearables market began to show signs of weakness. And, a number of negative market events occurred in rapid succession. For example:

The market research firm IDC reported that estimated sales of the first-generation Apple Watch had fallen over two consecutive quarters. These reports led Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, to make a rare public statement indicating that sales of the Apple Watch Series 2 are running above expectationsFitbit’s stock has lost significant value as poor sales of new product offerings make investors nervous about whether the company can maintain and accelerate consumer uptake of its devices.Microsoft and Motorola pulled back from the wearables market due to poor demand. In addition, Intel laid off employees in its wearables division, fueling speculation that the company may exit the sector (Intel says otherwise).Pebble, which proved extremely adept at generating interest among a core group of fans for its devices, was never able to achieve mass appeal. Pebble’s assets were recently acquired by Fitbit but that deal does not cover Pebble’s outstanding liabilities.Consumer opinion on wearables is mixed with a recent Gartner study indicating that many believe wearables are useless and expensive.

The flurry of bad news has led some to declare that wearables are dead, or at least over-hyped. Is this true? More...

Tan Ling Xuan's comment, February 5, 3:23 AM
This article is about ways to encourage creativity in students. The author suggests that institutions could implement a more flexible structure and give opportunities to students to demonstrate their understanding of a topic through different ways. I find this suggestion extremely relevant to Singaporean students as we are known for our rigid thinking, hence such implementations will definitely force students to think out of the box and realise there are a wide variety of ways to present our opinions, not just through pen-and-paper. Anderson also mentioned about widening the audience of student’s work, utilizing social media to publish student’s work and share their views on a global scale. This is also exemplified in Singapore whereby students are sometimes asked to blog about their thoughts on a certain social issue and provide solutions.

I've long believed that the power in the classroom can be more equitably distributed through the simple arrangement of classroom furniture. When we move desk and chairs into a horseshoe or semi-circle configuration, we share the responsibility for content examination.

The teacher is still the teacher, but the focus is more on information understanding and less on content delivery. I think that used in conjunction with some ideas and comments shared in this interview, we can authentically modernize teaching and learning.
