Google's Schmidt: Teens' mistakes will never go away

Google's Schmidt: Teens' mistakes will never go away | eDidaktik | Scoop.it
Speaking at a festival in the U.K., Google's executive chairman offers that the things teens do now will stay with them forever, by way of the Web. He also suggested some people are sharing too much online.

It must be peculiar for children of the Internet age.

They are the first to have a complete record of their whole lives. They are the first who'll be able to offer concrete proof of every one of their days, friends, and actions.

Eric Schmidt worries, however, that they'll be the first who'll never be allowed to forget their mistakes.

Part of our responsibility as teachers is to prepare our learners for their future. Helping them to understand that the Internet has a very long memory is pato of that role.

Lola Ripollés's comment, June 3, 3:53 AM
We must now educate on how to use all these new tools and try to make to make our teens understand that they should give a second thought to what they publish in the web. Difficult? of course! Educating was never an easy job.
Elizabeth Hutchinson's comment, June 3, 6:22 AM
How many times have you given your advice to your own children and they have only learnt by their own mistakes. Teaching this will be very difficult but is essential.

Brad Ovenell-Carter's curator insight, May 21, 1:29 PM

I apprecaite the diffficulties in implementing a 1:1 program, especially where none has existed before. But we need to see a 1:1 as merely a first step toward an multi-devices model.

The problem with 1:1 programs is that the focus on a single, common device or a single type of device. e.g. a laptop, in a BYOD environment. That notion is inherently restrictive. And it's not sustainable: a healthy ecosystem--and we should think of schools as learning ecosystems--is heterogenous; the more homogenous it is the more vulnerable it is.

Our users--our students--need to be able to connect with whatever device they happen to have at the moment be it a laptop, tablet or smartphone. We can start with the idea of 1:1 so long as we remember it is not the end goal. We need to make sure whatever structures we put in place to support a 1:1 model easily scales up to support multiple devices...the ∞:1 program. (http://www.ovenell-carter.com/blc12-preso-1-the-%E2%88%9E-1-program-or-why-your-11-program-is-out-of-date/)

OK this looks interesting but is also slightly disquieting at the same time. At first blush Now could be useful in drawing together information about your day however it's the underlying awareness and aggregation of what might otherwise be sensitive information about yourself that has potential for mischief or worse. Ah well with every advance comes the potential for misadventure or worse. What do others think?
