Today was the first day of the Design Indaba Expo. The place to find design made in South Africa. I didn’t know what to expect. Colors I presume? But it was so much more. Lidewij Edelkoort, the famous Dutch trendwatcher, is promoting design from Africa via Totemism: a revival of the Memphis design movement. Just like in the 80′s, South Africa is now choosing for bright colors and inspiring designers from all over the world.

Every other year, the Dutch town Arnhem depicts a view on the contemporary fashion culture with a ‘Mode Biennale’ (MoBA). This year’s edition will be themed ‘Fetishism in fashion’ and is composed by the infamous trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort.

Totemism: Memphis meets Africa exhibition curated by Li Edelkoort at Design Indaba Expo 2013 in Cape Town.

Trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort curated a key exhibition at the fair, ‘Totemism: Memphis meets Africa’, exploring the aesthetic overlaps between the Italian pop-coloured counterblast to dour modernism and contemporary South African design.

Geen grote namen van ontwerpers, maar het spraakmakende onderwerp fetisjisme zal tienduizenden bezoekers lokken naar de vijfde editie van MoBA, voorheen bekend als Mode Biënnale Arnhem.

Kinship in design is often viewed as simply a matter of showing relations, both formally and historically, between objects that share color, pattern, and local craft strategies. Totemism, however, often takes a "system of belief" one step further by introducing supernatural connections and avant-garde expressions that blend the folkloric and iconic in stirring ways.

Created purely from work from South African designers, Lidewij Edelkoort’s Totemism: Memphis Meets Africa will be unveiled tomorrow at the launch of Design Indaba Expo. Set in the centre of the Expo, the exhibition features work from 53 designers across all disciplines whose work chimes with the renewed interest in the 80’s Memphis movement and on this occasion, also with a distinctly African edge.
