One of the central exhibitions celebrates a fusion between African design and the European trends of the eighties
Today was the first day of the Design Indaba Expo. The place to find design made in South Africa. I didn’t know what to expect. Colors I presume? But it was so much more. Lidewij Edelkoort, the famous Dutch trendwatcher, is promoting design from Africa via Totemism: a revival of the Memphis design movement. Just like in the 80′s, South Africa is now choosing for bright colors and inspiring designers from all over the world.
Edelkoort has identified the Memphis design movement as the revival de jour - and has noted a few reasons for this.

So thrilled that Fete for the Senses was recently celebrated and reviewed on Trend Tablet. Rhiannon SIlver Gilmore, a visual researcher, maker, and creator of the blog, Intelligent Clashing, wrote a very thoughtful piece on the December event that I created in my home with a hand-picked selection of artists, designers, and slow design advocates.

We worden allemaal geboren in bondage, met een streng om ons babylijfje. Een navelstreng die de levenslijn is van de zwangerschap en ons met onze moeder verbindt op de meest directe en intieme manier, verbonden zoals we daarna nooit meer zijn.
Every other year, the Dutch town Arnhem depicts a view on the contemporary fashion culture with a ‘Mode Biennale’ (MoBA). This year’s edition will be themed ‘Fetishism in fashion’ and is composed by the infamous trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort.
Nomadismi Lidewij Edelkoort usually lends her eye for predicting trends to one of the shows in Milan, this year organising Nomadismi, a show focused on the constantly roaming nature of the contemporary human condition. With wireless communication technology, lightweight electronics and increasingly flexible work schedules, the definition of work and leisure, home and office are ever-more vague.

Totemism: Memphis meets Africa exhibition curated by Li Edelkoort at Design Indaba Expo 2013 in Cape Town.
Trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort curated a key exhibition at the fair, ‘Totemism: Memphis meets Africa’, exploring the aesthetic overlaps between the Italian pop-coloured counterblast to dour modernism and contemporary South African design.
Geen grote namen van ontwerpers, maar het spraakmakende onderwerp fetisjisme zal tienduizenden bezoekers lokken naar de vijfde editie van MoBA, voorheen bekend als Mode Biënnale Arnhem.
Kinship in design is often viewed as simply a matter of showing relations, both formally and historically, between objects that share color, pattern, and local craft strategies. Totemism, however, often takes a "system of belief" one step further by introducing supernatural connections and avant-garde expressions that blend the folkloric and iconic in stirring ways.
Created purely from work from South African designers, Lidewij Edelkoort’s Totemism: Memphis Meets Africa will be unveiled tomorrow at the launch of Design Indaba Expo. Set in the centre of the Expo, the exhibition features work from 53 designers across all disciplines whose work chimes with the renewed interest in the 80’s Memphis movement and on this occasion, also with a distinctly African edge.
