The Value of Mistakes: Should It Matter How Long A Student Takes To Learn? | EdD etc. | Scoop.it

"James Joyce affirms that geniuses not only accept mistakes as part of the learning process, but willingly seek them out as doors to self-discovery. In education, our perception of mistakes is important. It challenges conceptions of what defines success and failure."

Student Learning Plans Provide Motivation, Focus for College

Student Learning Plans Provide Motivation, Focus for College | EdD etc. | Scoop.it
For students who are struggling academically or don't grasp the relevance of success in school, having a plan early on that links their courses to a career goal can make all the difference. One tangible way to lay out a pathway is with a "student learning plan."

These plans are mandated in 23 states (and the District of Columbia), and legislation is pending in a handful of others in an effort to build student college and career readiness. A new policy brief out today from the Rennie Center for Education Research and Policy, a nonprofit, independent education research organization in Cambridge, Mass., explains the best strategies to implement plans and potential benefits.

Interactive Sesame Street, Nat Geo TV come to Microsoft Kinect...

The skinny: For decades, educational video games have failed to get a rise out of kids and parents; that 1985’s The Oregon Trail is still the genre’s most well-known is telling. You could say that Microsoft aims to shake that perception with its two newest apps for the Xbox 360, Kinect Sesame Street TV and Kinect Nat Geo TV, but Microsoft has said proudly that these are not games. Instead, the shows combine pre-recorded videos with Kinect’s motion and voice sensors, and the results are two entirely different tacks on adding interactivity to standard TV series.

10 Steps to a Successful School iPad Program - iPads in Education | EdD etc. | Scoop.it
iPads have certainly become a highly desired commodity in education. Apple is reporting that schools are purchasing iPads by a ratio of 2:1 over MacBooks. Jessica V Allen's curator insight, December 13, 2012 10:56 AM

As teachers continue to explore student centered learning and student negotiated inquiry, it is important that students have tools that can help them work together, investigate, and create explanations of their deep understanding.  iPads are a great tool for those goals and this helps schools see how best to begin that process... with careful planning!

Studies Find Payoff in 'Personalizing' Algebra

Studies Find Payoff in 'Personalizing' Algebra | EdD etc. | Scoop.it
An ongoing series of studies shows students do better when word problems are tailored to their interests.

While "personalization" has become a buzzword in education, it can be hard to determine what really makes a subject relevant to individual children in the classroom. An ongoing series of studies at Southern Methodist University suggests learning students' interests upfront and incorporating them into lessons can get struggling students to try harder and substantially improve their performance in algebra.
