Educational Technology Guy: Discovery Education Science Techbook debuting for High School!

Discovery Education Science Techbook is an incredible resource for educators. It's more than a digital textbook. "It’s a different way of thinking. Thinking outside the box, perhaps. Or more appropriately, thinking outside the book." OU study uncovers dishonesty among online class participant « Educational Technology

By Brian Vadakin, the Post

Online classes may have increased educational accessibility for many students, but a study conducted by two Ohio University professors shows they might have contributed to a large increase in academic dishonesty. Mark Shatz and Frank LoSchiavo, two psychology professors at OU’s Zanesville Branch campus, used an introductory psychology course to survey the level of academic dishonesty in online courses. At OU, students can take online classes through programs offered by the eCampus department. The research found that, after students had taken a class with 14 online, not-proctored quizzes, 72.5 percent of the 40 students reported cheating on at least one of the quizzes. The 14 quizzes allowed students plenty of opportunities to cheat, LoSchiavo said.

Schools in the U.S. need 100 Mbps per 1,000 broadband users « Articles « NExsT Digital

Schools are moving to using the Internet as a teaching resource throughout the day, not just as an add-on, SETDA says. Schools in the U.S. will need broadband speeds of 100 Mbps per 1,000 students and staff members by the 2014-15 school year in order to meet a growing demand for Web-based instruction and a skyrocketing number of student-owned Web devices, according to a new report by a trade group representing state education agencies.

Technology: ReWalk exoskeleton allows paralyzed to walk again

With the ReWalk, an individual is able to stand, walk, and climb stairs, using a pair of crutches and a set of wrist strap buttons that determine her movement. The exoskeleton's motion sensors and onboard computer system are used to detect shifts in weight and balance, which trigger movements in its lower limbs. These movements are executed by small motors, and the entire system is powered by a four-pound battery stored in a user's backpack.

Educational Technology Guy: Livescribe SmartPen - 5 years of smartpen use and my review

I love my Livescribe SmartPen. It is a great resource for me to take hand written notes and then have them digitized and saved. It also includes a voice recorder that syncs with your written notes. I've been using it at conferences, meetings, and to do science work and calculations. It is much faster than typing and works great for math, science, symbols, and diagrams. I love that I can then view my notes on any device and even send my notes via email, to Evernote, Docs, or a variety of apps.

Education officials unveil website, blogs for parents in wake of low FCAT scores | The Florida Current

The Department of Education rolled out a communications outreach program Monday to teach parents about its role in state education. It includes a new website, hotline, and online forums and blogs for parents.

It comes a week after much lower Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores were released, prompting the State Board of Education to lower the standard writing score from a 4 to a 3. It's graded in a range from 0 to 6. Education officials, however, say the call to reach out directly to parents came before the release of the FCAT scores.
