Does Technology Interfere With Your Teaching?

Does Technology Interfere With Your Teaching? | EDCI280 | Scoop.it
In this brilliant set of slides, lecturer in Pedagogy, Dr Ashley Casey, uses Inuit Dogs to discuss the need to develop a 'pedagogy of technology'.
Ileanna Gama's insight:

How do I use technology to achieve specific educational goals? How do I make technology and tool and not a nuisance? Technology is a great medium to supplement education, but how do I use it appropriately without relying on it too heavily? Technology shouldn't interfere with learning, it should enhance it. As the article mentions, pedagogy and learning need to remain the focus, and not what cool new apps are available.

What is Global Competence? | Global Teacher Education | EDCI280 | Scoop.it
Ileanna Gama's insight:

In order to teach students to be globally competent, teachers must first be globally competent themselves. In today’s global economy, technology and ingenuity are leading the way in advancing our day-to-day lives. As a future educator of the 21st century it is my duty to be globally competent, socially conscious, and maintain a creative and innovative approach to education.

Awesome idea! Great way to help kids self-motivate and remain positive. Maintaining a positive classroom climate is essential for an enjoyable and productive learning environment. When students learn to handle their emotions and frustrations in a constructive way, they not only benefit as individuals, but the class as a whole.

KIPP is helping kids get through college, and more colleges are sponsoring KIPP students
Ileanna Gama's insight:

KIPP schools and students are making breakthroughs! "KIPP and several other educational organizations have thrown out the old philosophy of letting students struggle on their own to develop college survival skills. Instead, they are partnering with colleges that promise to show students how to study and help them handle crises with mentors and advisers."

Could college partnerships with all high schools be the future of tertiary education? Should colleges assist students across the board?

Ileanna Gama's insight:

This idea could be developed in greater detail. How much of what social media "fulfills" for us is a legitimate NEED, rather than a justification for an over popularize consumption of our time?  What about those individuals that abuse social media? For many, these popular social networking sites or more of an obsession rather than a means to connect and acquire new information. Why are computer screens fulfilling such fundamental needs? Could this suggest that there is a deficit in our society? Might personal interactions one day become obsolete? We should be wary of the unhealthy behavior that social media sites promote, especially in our youth!

Reluctant to embrace the inevitable take over of technology? Become tech savvy and acquire an appreciation for the advancements in education that technology has made. As the speaker in this video highlights, technology is about capturing perplexity. Students in the 21st century are of the tech revolution. They will have access and exposure to all things "tech". Why not incorporate it into the classroom as tool to generate perplexing material in order to master an objective?

Ileanna Gama's insight:

When forming one's teaching philosophies and methods, it is important to become familiar with philosophies that differ from the "traditional" education model. Education shouldn't be limited to what one is "used to". There are many great principles of education that Montessori offers, not all of which have to be practiced in a Montessori school specifically. As and educator I want to be open to a variety of perspectives and philosophies so that I may mold myself into the best educator I can be.

The department chair handed me a textbook to teach from. I took one look at it, and decided I couldn't inflict such dry, pedantic stuff on my students. I also noticed that my classroom door was closed and no one was watching me.
Ileanna Gama's insight:

Are we expecting too much from our educators? Have we become so "test score obsessed" that we have lost sight of the basics? Have teachers become robots that spit out information at kids? Where will education be 20, 30, even 40 years from now?
