Enable Closed Captioning on iPhone, iPad, and in iTunes

Enable Closed Captioning on iPhone, iPad, and in iTunes | EDUcational Chatter | Scoop.it

"Closed Captioning places written text at the bottom of video content, allowing for anyone to read along with the video rather than listen to the audio. This is an essential feature for certain accessibility purposes and for individuals who are hard of hearing, but it’s also just a useful feature to enable if you want to watch a movie silently and read subtitles."

"We used Book Creator to meld our notes and pictures and created voice overs for the books. I wondered if students would emerge from the project with more than just technology skills and they impressed us by answering questions on their books, When I asked them if making the book helped them learn they said ."Yes, cause the information keeps traveling around your head when you need to use it."

22 History and Geography iPad Apps for Kids « Imagination Soup | Fun Learning and Play Activities for Kids | EDUcational Chatter | Scoop.it

As a History and Geography teacher I am always looking for resources to share with students, parents,  as well as my peers.  Melissa Taylor of http://imaginationsoup.net provides a nice variety of Geography and History options covering a range between grade school and high school.

A couple apps that jump out at me are: Egyptian Hieroglyphics Decoder and The Civil War Today.  Both take the interested parties to resources and interactives that one will not find in a textbook.  So, be sure to check these and the other 20 apps out.

Collaborative software for the iPad – iPad whiteboard

Collaborative software for the iPad – iPad whiteboard | EDUcational Chatter | Scoop.it

Whether it be in the educational scenario or possibly for a business use, an iPad whiteboard application can be very useful for project collaboration. You do have some online collaboration tools available, I believe there is one within Google docs. When you have a situation when two or more people are working together, it can be very beneficial to have a single workspace."

Engage Students with Flipped Video Tasks

Engage Students with Flipped Video Tasks | EDUcational Chatter | Scoop.it

One of the major criticisms of this method though is that a dull unengaging content doesn't suddenly become engaging because it's on a video on the web, so how do we get students to engage with the content and make sure they watch it in a challenging and interactive way.

Vialogues is a useful tool for attempting to do this (though dull content will always be dull) because it enables you to create interaction around the video that actually gets students to think about and engage with the content.

This presentation by Laura Campaña, Director of Infant & Early Childhood Program at Junior Blind of America, was given in March 2012.

"It introduces multiple applications on the iPad iOS platform that have been tested on children with visual impairment. It includes cumulative data collected on iPad use compared to APH Lightbox use with children with visual impairment during a study done by the Junior Blind. The purpose of the study was to investigate the use of the Apple iPad as a means to strengthen or initiate visual engagement, parental interaction, communication, visual attentiveness, reaching adn/or activation among children with visual impairments and/or multiple disabilities."

10 Incredibly Powerful Teaching Tools of the Future

10 Incredibly Powerful Teaching Tools of the Future | EDUcational Chatter | Scoop.it

Utopian visions of learning are tempting, if for no other reason than they absolve us of accountability to create it right now, leading to nebulous romanticizing about how powerful learning could be if we just did more of X and Y.

What is the theory that underpins moocs?

What is the theory that underpins moocs? | EDUcational Chatter | Scoop.it

These are a few of the more prominent attributes of MOOCs that I’ve been involved with. As stated above, there is overlap between our model at that of Coursera/EDx. However, Coursera/EDx emulates the existing education system, choosing instead to transfer it online rather than transform it online. No doubt they will continue to evolve their model and we’ll continue to evolve ours.
