Use It Or Lose It: Usability in education » Brain Based Learning

Use It Or Lose It: Usability in education » Brain Based Learning | EdTech Today | Scoop.it
Lisi Gopin, M.E.T.'s insight:

The easier an interface is to understand intuitively, the more a child will be able to interact with it on their own and pay attention to the features. This will stimulate cognition about the object and about the interaction. When a child needs too much guidance from a parent or teacher, they will pay less attention to the object and interact with it less, which results in less thought and less learning. So usability design is a key factor in the educational success of a specific product, and an important field to understand if you’re interested in undertaking development of educational games, apps, or any other software.

Apps in Education: Geography and Science - Cross over apps

Apps in Education: Geography and Science - Cross over apps | EdTech Today | Scoop.it

"There are a number of apps that are being released that give us direct and instant access to real time data to events and happenings around the world. These apps allow the students in the classroom to have the same data and information that authorities, scientists and researcher have. This is important form the students point of view as it makes the learning more real."

Are you teaching high-bandwidth kids? » Brain Based Learning | EdTech Today | Scoop.it
Lisi Gopin, M.E.T.'s insight:

The challenge for educators is to engage students who are used to being bombarded with entertainment through videos, TV, games, and surfing the net. This generation is used to being in control of their entertainment, much more so than their parents. Instead of turning on the TV when their show is on, they can watch on demand – and choose whether they want to download or stream.

Reflections on “Playing” » Brain Based Learning

Reflections on “Playing” » Brain Based Learning | EdTech Today | Scoop.it
Lisi Gopin, M.E.T.'s insight:

Play is a powerful medium for learning, yet comes naturally to children and seems like a pleasant way to pass the time between more “serious” work. It is very appealing to educators to be able to harness this power because of the seemingly effortless way in which children learn important skills while playing, as well as the fact that they generally choose to engage in play rather than needing it to be scheduled for them by adults.

How To Make Students Better Online Researchers

How To Make Students Better Online Researchers | EdTech Today | Scoop.it

Getting kids to really focus on what exactly they are searching for, and then be able to further distill idea into a few key specific search terms is a skill that we must teach students, and we have to do it over and over again. We never question the vital importance of teaching literacy, but we have to be mindful that there are many kinds of “literacies”. An ever more important one that ALL teachers need to be aware of is digital literacy.
