Serious Gaming In Education Can Mirror Formative Assessments

Serious Gaming In Education Can Mirror Formative Assessments | Ed Tech Tools | Scoop.it

As potentially every education program, every curriculum, can be reshaped over the next few years by the use of Serious Games, I anticipated that traditional standardized measurements of varying levels of comprehension within a subject area will tend to become obsolete for a variety of reasons

Nik Peachey's curator insight, March 25, 2013 11:05 AM

Great to see interest coming back to the use of computer games again after our recent obsession with social networks.

Ryan McDonough's curator insight, July 7, 6:57 AM

Games like SimCity immerse you in a world where 10 hours can feel like 20 minutes. If we could somehow make teaching that engaging, students would be thrilled to go to school everyday. How can we effectively use games in a manner where it has a purpose yet it also allows for learner creativity and individuality? How can we tied perfomance assessments into games? How can they fit within the busy school day? Many questions still need to be answered. This is a good start on how formative assessments can be used on gaming.

A really good overview of the issues in Online and Distance Education. Prof Keppell explores the context, the enablers, digital literacies, personalised learning and user generated content. He raises questions about the skills students need to succeed and how we can assist students to manage the transition into digital life.

Which is the best mindmapping software?

Which is the best mindmapping software? | Ed Tech Tools | Scoop.it

I track discussions about mind mapping on Twitter and in blogs, and I often hear or read the question "Which is the best mindmapping software?" Anyone who gives you a single, immediate answer either knows you and your mindmapping activities very well, or is likely recommending the one that they've become familiar with themselves.

Linda Dougherty's curator insight, October 12, 2013 10:14 AM

Have started showing students during Google presentation tutorials how to outline their presentations like they always do with those bulleted lines on the slides.  Then take those sentences, change them into titles, and put one title on each slide. Select one image per slide. If needed, add URL links. Add the works cited for the image in tiny print at the bottom of the slide. Move those outlined bulleted points to the note section or toss into a document to print out for a group presenetation.

No more slides crowded with text and 4 images! No more students sleeping in the classroom while their classmates read from the Smartboard.

Susan Kay Daniels's curator insight, January 13, 9:30 AM

This is a PowerPoint presentation that would have sent my former employers into shock. They had no imagination whatsoever. However, Eugene Cheng clearly has wonderful artistic skills and knows how to present them. In addition, he clearly has a nice budget to work with. These kind of beautiful graphics don't come at low price. I thoroughly enjoyed glancing through this presentation and plan to use it as inspiration for future projects.

Warmly,

Susan Daniels

Explain Everything is a very powerful tool, initially teachers find it useful to use to produce resources for their students.  Using it with the students as a creation tool, from outlining how they completed a project to peer feedback and feedforward, is the next step.

6 Steps to Add Voice Comments to Google Docs ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Ed Tech Tools | Scoop.it

"With this new application in Google Docs ( Drive ), teachers can now record their audio comments and share them with their students. I see this as a better way to give feedback on students' work and I do believe there are things we can express with our voice that no written code could ever capture like the tone and intonation..etc."

Update/Tip: I tried it out-if you have to change your original document-just copy it and add voice to it-121 Writing doesn't sync with your Google Docs updates.

Instructors are always looking for ways to add audio feedback-I'd much prefer adding voice messages to my student's Google Docs then just text like I have in the past.

Analysis of recent 1:1 learning initiatives in primary and secondary | Ed Tech Tools | Scoop.it

The main beneficiaries of the 1:1 initiatives identified in Europe were the students and teachers, who in most cases received laptops and netbooks, in some cases tablets and in a few cases, smartphones. In most of the initiatives, students owned the devices and could use them for their activities in and out of school.
