14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools

14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools | Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Saying that it has always been this way, doesn’t count as a legitimate justification to why it should stay that way. Teacher and administrators all over the world are doing amazing things, but some of the things we are still doing, despite all the new solutions, research and ideas out there is, to put it mildly, incredible.
I’m not saying we should just make the current system better… we should change it into something else.
I have compiled a list of 14 things that are obsolete in 21st century schools and it is my hope that this will inspire lively discussions about the future of education.

Knowing that coding is an important skill for students to learn, I knew I had to come up with ways to teach coding skills. However, I knew nothing about coding, so I needed to learn a few basics. Which is why I am so happy I get to share one of the first ever coding lessons I incorporated into the literacy curriculum AND it is just in time for the Mentor Text Lessons to Warm Up Your Winter Link-Up using the book Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner.

What do maker projects look like in each subject area?

What do maker projects look like in each subject area? | Ed Tech | Scoop.it
Recently a friend of mine said, “When I think of makerspaces, I don’t think of history classes. I picture areas where kids are playing with toys and stuff.”

This comment resonated with my own experience. The first time I heard about makerspaces, I thought, “That’s awesome and I’d love to have something like that, but I teach social studies.” I had a mental block that kept me from seeing the bigger picture around makerspaces.

So, I started with the most natural tie-in. We did an economics unit where students used design thinking to build a product. After redesigning the space, I realized something:

A makerspace isn’t just about engineering.

Five Popular Infographic Templates (And Why They Work so Well)

Five Popular Infographic Templates (And Why They Work so Well) | Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Infographics, an effective form of content marketing, are everywhere on the Web, but it isn't always easy to come up with good designs when you want to create one yourself, especially if you're not skilled in design and visual content.

Fortunately, you have plenty of options. Many blogs and other publications offer tips and tricks to help improve your visual content, and sites like online infographic maker Visme (which I founded) and applications such as PowerPoint offer templates to help you get started.

Templates help you get a general feel about what works for an infographic and what doesn't, which can then allow you to branch out with your own designs. Often, though, in the business world, a lot of templates are simply tweaked to create an infographic; the basic template remains intact. After all, if it isn't broke, why fix it?

So here are five of the most popular templates, the reasons they work so well, and a few tips and tricks to help you make them your own....

Why Scratch is one of my favorite cross – curricular tools | SCHS Media Blog | Ed Tech | Scoop.it
I can’t remember the first time I used Scratch.  I am fairly certain it wasn’t before I started my library life, so sometime in the past three years?  My vague memories should not be any indicator of my feelings about Scratch though.  I love Scratch! For those uninitiated, Scratch is a drag and drop coding platform created by the folks at MIT’s Media Lab, an innovative, tech focused, research facility located in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Using color- coded, drag and drop blocks, Scratch demystifies computer programing, builds creative thinking and problem solving skills, and encourages students to learn by doing.

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy -

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Ed Tech | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

The Padagogy Wheel, though, is not rocket science. It is an everyday device that can be readily used by everyday teachers; it can be applied to everything from curriculum planning and development, to writing learning objectives and designing centered activities. The idea is for the users to respond to the challenges that the Wheel presents for their teaching practices, and to ask themselves the tough questions about their choices and methods.
