The Wynton Marsalis of Ecuador - Detroit Metro Times

The Wynton Marsalis of Ecuador
Detroit Metro Times
“It was an old-school environment and it was a great experience,” Szymanski recalled via cell phone from Ecuador. The afternoon of the interview he was under the weather.
Gisele Blum's insight:

"When you truly desire something, all the universe conspires to help  you achieve it."  Paulo Coelho

That's the tag line under his name on Walt Szymanski's website.

In 1966 swing, bop and blues drummer J.C. Heard who by that time had already performed with Lena Horne, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Benny Carter, Cab Calloway, Erroll Garner, Jazz at the Philharmonic, Pete Johnson, Charlie Parker, Sir Charles Thompson, Roy Elridge and Dizzy Gillespie, moved from New York to Detroit where he worked as a bandleader and a mentor to younger musicians into the mid-1980s. He was so inspired by Walt Szymanski's arranging ability that he hand picked him as music director for his newly formed Duke Ellington Repertory Orchestra, the JC Heard Orchestra.

Szymanski moved to Ecuador in in 2011 from his native Detroit to teach brass at a branch of the University of San Francisco. He has formed a band with some of his students paving the way for an Ecuadorian jazz scene, which is a blend of jazz and native Ecuadorian music.

Can we say that he is paying it forward ?

Fla. Judge Rejects Ecuador's Suit Against Sibling Bankers

Fla. Judge Rejects Ecuador's Suit Against Sibling Bankers | Ecuador | Scoop.it
A Miami judge has cut off Ecuador's long reach into the U.S. judicial system, halting the country's effort to recover assets from two fugitive banker brothers accused of looting one of the country's biggest banks in the 1990s.
Gisele Blum's insight:

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa is not happy about this. After all, the Isaias brothers represent for him the excesses and abuse of the free market system that "he appreciates" up to a certain point, according to one of his advisors while a student at the University of Illinois.

The Florida Judge based his decision on precedents set in consideration of our Constitution's 5th and 14th Amendments."He cited in his ruling the 1965 federal case Republic of Iraq v. First National City Bank, noting an appellate court thwarted Iraq's attempt to have money returned from a New York bank account belonging to assassinated King Faisal II".

If it's good enought for King Faisal II, it's good enough for the Isaias.
