Report: Climate Change Has Already Brought Catastrophe to US Wildlife | Ecosystems: Constantly Changing | Scoop.it

Jan 30, 2013

Climate change has already pushed the nation's wildlife into crisis, according to a report released Wednesday from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF), and further catastrophe, including widespread extinction, can only be curbed with swift action to curb the carbon pollution that has the planet sweltering.

Entitled Wildlife in a Warming World: Confronting the Climate Crisis, the report looks at 8 regions across the U.S. where "the underlying climatic conditions to which species have been accustomed for thousands of years," the report explains, have been upturned by human-caused climate change.

“Some of America’s most iconic species—from moose to sandhill cranes to sea turtles – are seeing their homes transformed by rapid climate change,” stated Dr. Amanda Staudt, climate scientist at the National Wildlife Federation.

The Habitat Advocate | Ecosystems: Constantly Changing | Scoop.it

In a native forest, old trees naturally die and saplings germinate from the seed of their parent trees. Native forests are living regenerating ecosystems.

But when humans destroy and disturb forest ecology, the forests change. When humans destroy complete forests and leave a few token shade-providing ‘paddock trees‘ in deforested paddocks, and livestock fertilize the thin fragile soils, humans completely deny forest ecological succession. Isolated trees are isolated trees, so they die. Dieback is one such outcome – suitably named; that is ‘Deforestation Dieback‘ as distinct from the disease ‘Phytophthora dieback‘.

Effects of Drought

Effects of Drought | Ecosystems: Constantly Changing | Scoop.it

Drought can have many devastating effects on communities and the surrounding environment. The degree of devastation depends on the strength of the drought and the length of time an area is considered to be in a drought. Drought has greater impacts on poorer communities than on more prosperous communities who have better opportunities to bring in resources from other areas. However, drought can be very harsh on any type of community.

Droughts can cause major impacts on the biotic and abiotic factors of an environment. This is caused by the obvious shortage of water which in turn harms the organisms residing in the enviornment. Organisms need water to suvive and shortage of water causes the water suppy to become more polluted with farming and indusdrial chemicals. Droughts also effect agriculure and cause a shortage of food and risimg food prices. Droughts can effect every corner of an enviornment.
