The Hunt for the Golden Mole review Richard Girling's 'entertaining and provocative' quest

The Hunt for the Golden Mole review Richard Girling's 'entertaining and provocative' quest | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

Richard Girling's tale of an elusive burrowing mammal turns into a compelling study of humankind's devastating cruelty to animals. In 1964, in Jowhar, Somalia, zoologist Alberto Simonetta stumbled on a disused bakery oven in which barn owls had made...

Garry Rogers's insight:

The majority of Earth's creatures have not been identified.  The unknown species tend to be the smallest, but some belong to familiar groups.  For example, lepidopterists estimate that only about 10% of moth species have been identified.  Human impacts will extinguish many of them and there will be no evidence, not even a tiny pile of bones, to show that they ever existed.

Rapid response to any wildlife emergency is vital in determining the ultimate outcome of any mission.  Every week the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust/Kenya Wildlife Service field teams operating within the greater Tsavo Conservation Area are tasked with the huge responsibility of ensuring Tsavo’s elephants and wild species have the protection they need in order to survive the increasing pressures of poaching, human-wildlife conflict and habitat destruction.

The King's Decree of 7-28-14, "Regarding the United States Navy and the destruction of Hawai'i's marine environment" | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

This letter (decree/edict) was written by Ali’i Nui Mō`ī Edmund K. Silva, Jr. Selected highlights are below (bolding is the King's).

"...the U.S. government has no spiritual or ancestral ties to these islands, as myself and my people do, they have raped and pillaged these lands and our oceans with absolutely no regard for the effect such heinous actions will have on our future generations. This abhorrent behavior will no longer be tolerated, as the Kingdom cares deeply for the land, the oceans, and all walks of life, both human and animal, which inhabit this archipelago."

Tiger Day starts an Avaaz petition to close Chinese tiger farms

Tiger Day starts an Avaaz petition to close Chinese tiger farms | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it
No tiger cub deserves to be born into a life of suffering and eventually be killed for its fur, and other parts used for "chinese magic" or bogus potions.

"China is allowing the sale of captive-bred tiger skins and body parts. They are denying a UN agreement which calls for such trade to be banned. The conditions in these farms are horrible!Images appeared on in our mailbox showing deceased tigers from these camps. Our staff was shocked but decided to publish them. Warning, these images are not for the weak-hearted.

"Something needs to be done! There are just 3200 wild tigers living in the wild and over 5000 held captive in these tiger farms! These creatures deserve a worthy life and we want to give it to them. If we move as one, we can make a change! "

Garry Rogers's insight:

During the past century we lost 97% of all wild tigers. Habitat loss and hunting eliminated 97,000 of the 100,000 tigers we had a century ago.  At this rate, all tigers living in the wild will be extinct in 10 years! Celebrate International Tiger Day and encourage others to join in.

Hundreds of animals disappear as humans multiply

Hundreds of animals disappear as humans multiply | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it
As the number of humans on Earth has nearly doubled over the past four decades, the number of bugs, slugs, worms and crustaceans has declined by 45 per cent, say researchers.

Meanwhile, the larger loss of wildlife big and small across the planet may be a key driver of growing violence and unrest, said another study in the journal Science as part of a special series on disappearing animals.

Invertebrates are important to the Earth because they pollinate crops, control pests, filter water and add nutrients to the soil.

The decline of invertebrates is similar to that of land-based vertebrates, according to an analysis of scientific literature by an international team including Ben Collen of University College London.

Among animals with backbones that live on land, 322 species have disappeared in the past five centuries, and the remaining species show about a 25 per cent decline in abundance.

"We were shocked to find similar losses in invertebrates as with larger animals, as we previously thought invertebrates to be more resilient," says Collen.

Garry Rogers's insight:

The numbers are staggering.  Every new bit of research shows it's worse than I thought.  Every bit of good news is so small compared to the bad.  We have to stay engaged--sign the petitions, send the emails, make the calls.

Forget the war for biodiversity, it’s just war.

Forget the war for biodiversity, it’s just war. | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

A contributed essay from Professor Rosaleen Duffy, Professor of Political Ecology of Development, SOAS, University of London.

Conservationists are facing some difficult and critically important choices over how to conserve elephants and rhinos in the wake of a rapid rise in poaching. But there appears to be a rush towards more militarised responses, which intersect with the strategic aims of the US-led ‘War on Terror’. Elephants and rhinos themselves may be fast becoming the latest weapon in this war. This is not ‘back to the barriers’, which implies a defensive position - it is an ‘offensive’ position extending well beyond protected areas. It could easily lead to an escalation of violence that will undermine decades of work with local communities, and it runs counter to the Conservation Initiative on Human Rights.

Garry Rogers's insight:

Good discussion of the use of force to protect wildlife.

How Monsanto and biotech companies violate the Nuremberg Code with inhumane experiments on humans

How Monsanto and biotech companies violate the Nuremberg Code with inhumane experiments on humans | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

"The basic human rights protections established by the Nuremberg Code, which was adopted immediately after the end of World War II, continue to serve as a global template for how human beings are to be treated by the scientific community. But the modern equivalent of the Holocaust is now taking form under the guise of feeding the world and saving the planet, with Monsanto and others in the biotech industry routinely testing their chemicals and faux foods on the public without informed consent, just like amoral scientists did in the death camps.

"As far as medical experiments go, every individual has the right under the Code to consent, or not, to being used in scientific trials or tests that involve toying around with new or unusual substances. This constitutes the essence of the Code, which expressly prohibits human experimentation unless the person being experimented on first gives his or her permission, with full disclosure of any potential adverse events."

Garry Rogers's insight:

The Nuremberg Code does not protect nonhuman species, but since other species influence human health, it should.
