Garry Rogers's insight:

The 1970’s efforts to deal with population were abandoned. Now, population growth, like global warming, cannot be stopped in time to save Earth’s species and ecosystems.

Wild Horses a Problem for Ranchers? Wolves Could Fix That

Wild Horses a Problem for Ranchers? Wolves Could Fix That | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

"Today’s New York Times has a report on the wild horse population boom in the American West, and for once, I agree with the ranchers:  Bizarre federal policies over the last 40 years have caused wild horses to run out of control, causing rampant overgrazing while also running up out-of-control costs (currently $50 million a year) to house horses that have been taken off the land, but can’t be euthanized."

Garry Rogers's insight:

I agree with Mr. Conniff’s response that predators could control the horse problem. First, the cattle have to go. The cattle use range resources that should support pronghorn and other wildlife species.

When it Comes to The Arctic Methane Monster, What We Don't Know Really Could Kill Us -- NASA Model Study Shows Very High Carbon Release Uncertainty

When it Comes to The Arctic Methane Monster, What We Don't Know Really Could Kill Us -- NASA Model Study Shows Very High Carbon Release Uncertainty | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

Can we save humanity from the greatest threat ever? Must-watch video highlights the risks and uncertainties of catastrophic methane release from the Arctic environment.

After millions of years of ice ages, the Arctic has become a vast repository of fossil carbon.

Over the millennia, layer after layer of carbon-based biological material has been locked away in the frozen soil of the Arctic tundras and sea beds. Some of these stores have simply become entombed within the ice. Others, already turned to methane through the slow fluxes of time, underlay the frozen ground and the chilly Arctic sea-bed floor as a kind of fire ice.

Garry Rogers's insight:

Scary movie!

Center for Food Safety | Blog | A Sticky Situation for EPA on Pollinators and Pesticides | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it
There’s been quite a bit of buzz about bees lately. Two weeks ago, the White House released a Presidential Memorandum establishing a “Pollinator Health Task Force” with plans to improve pollinator health and habitat. Many people (including the Pollinator Team at Center for Food Safety) were pleased to hear the White House acknowledge the impact of pesticides, especially neonicotinoids (“neonics” for short). Acknowledgment of the problem is the first step toward r

"Hey! Ho! Fossil Fuels Have Got to Go!" -- World Sees Largest Climate March in History Amidst Mounting Dangers

"Hey! Ho! Fossil Fuels Have Got to Go!" -- World Sees Largest Climate March in History Amidst Mounting Dangers | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it
According to the National Climate Data Center, the summer of 2014 was the hottest in the global record. It was a season of record wildfires, sea surface temperatures far above the 20th Century average, and of record droughts and rainfall events around the globe. And it was a year in which the ability of nations to provide food for the world’s seven billion and growing population amidst a mounting tally of extreme droughts and floods was called increasingly into question.

On Sunday September 24, 2014, the ever-more alarmed people of the world responded.

In New York City, an estimated 410,000 took ...
Garry Rogers's insight:

GR:  Human impacts are so massive that "reasonable" compromises have no effect.  This post is about greenhouse gasses and global warming.  Other stories about plastic in the oceans, pesticides on the land, and our bulging population’s growing need for building, burning, cutting, fishing, grazing, hunting, and plowing are also untouched by "reasonable" compromises.  We need to redefine our compromises as effective immediately (say 2 years) vs. long-term (10 years).  It is nonsense to let special interests such as the oil/coal industry have their congressmen suggest reasonable solutions.

Mongabay,
-▶ IT'S NOT JUST EXTINCTION:  MEET DEFAUNATION Experts say defaunation is already having large-scale impacts across ecosystems, undercutting everything from pollination to pest control to water and soil quality. For example, a flood of recent research has found that the world's pollinators may be in crisis—including bees and butterflies—threatening global agriculture and potentially costing billions. But the impacts of defaunation could even lead to worsening outbreaks of disease in humans.
Defaunation can also result in co-extinctions. For example, many animals are ecologically connected to plant species, who may depend on them for pollination or seed dispersal. But if you lose the animal species—or if its population drops below a certain threshold—plants are likely to vanish as well. http://news.mongabay.com/2014/0724-hance-defaunation.html

Protect Wildlife from Killing Contests

Protect Wildlife from Killing Contests | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

"Believe it or not, the practice of hunting non-game fur-bearing mammals in contests is still alive and well in California. What’s more, cash prizes, known as inducements, are still being offered to participants who senselessly shoot and kill mammals such as coyotes, bears, bobcats and foxes.

"However, the California Fish and Game Commission, the regulatory body that governs such activities, is now considering action to reduce this senseless killing for sport by making it illegal to offer inducements. This change in regulation will serve to clarify existing law surrounding the “take” i.e. hunting of nongame mammals in hunting contests.

"Tell the California Fish and Game Commission that you support its proposed rulemaking to end inducements for hunting contests for nongame fur-bearing mammals."

Garry Rogers's insight:

GR:  Haven't we reached the point at which we decide to begin protecting, not killing wildlife?  Sign the petition and add a note telling the California Fish and Game Commission that they should stop licensing hunting and work harder to protect wildlife.

Awesome ! Biodiversity Visualized - Vancouver Film School

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty.”... ALBERT EINSTEIN

New science finds that two-thirds of Earth’s land-based ecosystems must be protected to sustain the biosphere long-term. Yet about one-half of Earth’s natural ecosystems have already been lost. The scientific review article by Dr. Glen Barry – entitled “Terrestrial ecosystem loss and biosphere collapse” – was published today in the international journal “Management of Environmental Quality”. http://www.ecointernet.org/2014/08/04/biosphere_collapse/

The Greater the Biodiversity in the Ecosystem, The Greater Resilience of an ecological community and for adaption.  Everything is Interconnected and interdependent.  Myopic genetic engineering destroys these connections and breaks the link of naturally evolving organisms
“A Thousand Invisible Cords: Connecting Genes to Ecosystems” is a 56-minute eco-documentary that can change how we view the world. Community genetics can be used to help save and restore natural ecosystems particularly in view of Climate Change evolutionary impacts. No longer will we see species as isolated members of ecosystems but as genetically connected members of a rich interacting community. In the words of the 19th century naturalist, writer, and environmental activist John Muir: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find that it is bound fast by a thousand invisible cords that cannot be broken to everything in the universe.”  http://vimeo.com/40615050

                       Interview With Elizabeth Kolbert, Author

▶  IN THE WORLD'S "SIXTH EXTINCTION": ARE HUMANS THE ASTEROID? Elizabeth Kolbert is the author of the new book The Sixth Extinction. It begins with a history of the "big five" extinctions of the past, and goes on to explain how human behavior is creating this sixth one — including our use of fossil fuels and the effects of climate change.

"We are effectively undoing the beauty and the variety and the richness of the world which has taken tens of millions of years to reach," Kolbert tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "... We're sort of unraveling that. ... We're doing, it's often said, a massive experiment on the planet and we really don't know what the end point is going to be." http://www.npr.org/2014/02/12/275885377/in-the-worlds-sixth-extinction-are-humans-the-asteroid

Garry Rogers's insight:

Just as our emotional response to different people varies, our fondness for different animal species varies, and we are not all the same. Killing dolphins, skinning dogs, imprisoning parrots in tiny cages, these are all things that some people can do and others cannot. Our species has never learned general respect for life, and now that we have created a great global emergency, we are beginning to recognize the importance of this general respect—Leopold’s “Land Ethic.”
