Animals Rights is the Greatest Social Justice Issue Since the Abolition of Slavery"

Animals Rights is the Greatest Social Justice Issue Since the Abolition of Slavery" | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

By Free From Harm Staff Writers | June 24, 2012 | Philip Wollen, Australian Philanthropist, Former VP of Citibank, Makes Blazing Animal Rights Speech.

Intelligence Squared’s 2012 series of debates kicked off with a look at the ethics of eating meat. Six speakers are divided into two teams for lively and insightful arguments for and against the proposition, Animals Should Be Off the Menu. Out of an audience of hundreds, 73.6% agreed meat should be off the menu upon hearing all of the arguments.

Garry Rogers's insight:

Great speech.  The arguments on behalf of animals overpowered the arguments for eating meat.  Ten minutes well spent.

Kariega Game Reserve photographic safari - Africa Geographic Blog

Kariega Game Reserve photographic safari - Africa Geographic Blog | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

Guests comment on a successful photographic expedition to Kariega Game Reserve.

By: Christian Boix and Brendon Jennings

"Africa Geographic Travel recently hosted the first of this years’ three fully booked photographic safaris at the always exciting Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This trip was once more led by Brendon Jennings, Kariega Game Reserve’s very own specialist photographic ranger and guide.

“The trip was blessed from the onset by an eclectic mix of people, a medical doctor, a retired couple from New Zealand, an art teacher and a photo journalist. One of the things I enjoy most about trips like this is the shared experiences we have with people from vastly different backgrounds with the common interest being nature and photography.”– (Brendon Jennings)

Garry Rogers's insight:

Photography field trips are a great alternative to hunting trips.  Photography clubs everywhere should plan more outings, and they should share their plans with their local wildlife agencies (often called Game ... agencies).  Obtaining a good photograph takes as much or more skill than killing with rifle or bow.

"...the U.S. government has no spiritual or ancestral ties to these islands, as myself and my people do, they have raped and pillaged these lands and our oceans with absolutely no regard for the effect such heinous actions will have on our future generations. Tiger Day starts an Avaaz petition to close Chinese tiger farms

Tiger Day starts an Avaaz petition to close Chinese tiger farms | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it
No tiger cub deserves to be born into a life of suffering and eventually be killed for its fur, and other parts used for "chinese magic" or bogus potions.

"China is allowing the sale of captive-bred tiger skins and body parts. They are denying a UN agreement which calls for such trade to be banned. The conditions in these farms are horrible!Images appeared on in our mailbox showing deceased tigers from these camps. Our staff was shocked but decided to publish them. Warning, these images are not for the weak-hearted.

"Something needs to be done! There are just 3200 wild tigers living in the wild and over 5000 held captive in these tiger farms! These creatures deserve a worthy life and we want to give it to them. If we move as one, we can make a change! "

Garry Rogers's insight:

During the past century we lost 97% of all wild tigers. Habitat loss and hunting eliminated 97,000 of the 100,000 tigers we had a century ago.  At this rate, all tigers living in the wild will be extinct in 10 years! Celebrate International Tiger Day and encourage others to join in.

The grey parrot’s perilous journey from the forests of Congo to solitary confinement in your living room.

The grey parrot’s perilous journey from the forests of Congo to solitary confinement in your living room. | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

rey parrots are one of Africa’s treasures, and seeing them bank and wheel in the skies in noisy flocks, or chatter in the canopies as they forage is a delight and privilege. They surely represent freedom in its purest form. But grey parrots are also the epitome of life behind bars. These intelligent, enigmatic birds are perhaps best known as the feathered entertainers that chirp, wolf-whistle and mimic their way into our hearts from cages in homes across the globe. So this is the story of a special bird that is vanishing from Africa’s forests as fast as morning mist under a tropical sun, and how our fascination for a species can lead to its extermination from the wild.
The history of the grey parrot’s domestication dates at least as far back as 2000 BC with Egyptian hieroglyphics clearly depicting grey parrots as pets. The ancient Greeks also valued them, as did wealthy Romans who often kept them in ornate cages....

Garry Rogers's insight:

We have no moral right to capture and imprison wild animals. The species we take have families and societies, they feel fear and loneliness, and they play important roles in natural ecosystems.  This insensitive practice by humans has created a commercial enterprise that threatens extinction for many species.

The Disgusting Reason African Elephants May Be Extinct By 2020

The Disgusting Reason African Elephants May Be Extinct By 2020 | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it
Chopsticks, hair pins, pendants, trinkets: These are why African elephants are dying in droves.

In 2013, more than 35,000 elephants across Africa were killed for their ivory, which is often carved and sold as ornaments, jewelry and other gift items. China is a major importer of ivory, where it’s highly prized as a luxury good. Ivory sellers also do a roaring trade in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and other parts of Asia; and troublingly, demand seems to be rising....

Forget the war for biodiversity, it’s just war.

Forget the war for biodiversity, it’s just war. | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

A contributed essay from Professor Rosaleen Duffy, Professor of Political Ecology of Development, SOAS, University of London.

Conservationists are facing some difficult and critically important choices over how to conserve elephants and rhinos in the wake of a rapid rise in poaching. But there appears to be a rush towards more militarised responses, which intersect with the strategic aims of the US-led ‘War on Terror’. Elephants and rhinos themselves may be fast becoming the latest weapon in this war. This is not ‘back to the barriers’, which implies a defensive position - it is an ‘offensive’ position extending well beyond protected areas. It could easily lead to an escalation of violence that will undermine decades of work with local communities, and it runs counter to the Conservation Initiative on Human Rights.

Garry Rogers's insight:

Good discussion of the use of force to protect wildlife.

How Monsanto and biotech companies violate the Nuremberg Code with inhumane experiments on humans

How Monsanto and biotech companies violate the Nuremberg Code with inhumane experiments on humans | Garry Rogers Nature Conservation News | Scoop.it

"The basic human rights protections established by the Nuremberg Code, which was adopted immediately after the end of World War II, continue to serve as a global template for how human beings are to be treated by the scientific community. But the modern equivalent of the Holocaust is now taking form under the guise of feeding the world and saving the planet, with Monsanto and others in the biotech industry routinely testing their chemicals and faux foods on the public without informed consent, just like amoral scientists did in the death camps.

"As far as medical experiments go, every individual has the right under the Code to consent, or not, to being used in scientific trials or tests that involve toying around with new or unusual substances. This constitutes the essence of the Code, which expressly prohibits human experimentation unless the person being experimented on first gives his or her permission, with full disclosure of any potential adverse events."

Garry Rogers's insight:

The Nuremberg Code does not protect nonhuman species, but since other species influence human health, it should.
