India’s Air Pollution Rivals China’s as World’s Deadliest

India’s Air Pollution Rivals China’s as World’s Deadliest | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
Although deaths caused by air pollution grew to 4.2 million in 2015 from 3.5 million in 1990, the rate of increase of about 20 percent was slower than the rate of the population rise during that time. That’s because of improved health care in many parts of the world, as well as public policy initiatives…
Garry Rogers's insight:
The smoke from burning coal, oil, diesel, and gasoline causes many health problems and deaths worldwide. According to the New York Times, the problem is so bad in India, that the country is going to make electric vehicles mandatory by 2030. The country is also switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The article doesn't mention the great loss of wildlife that is also occurring because of human burning of fossil fuels. The danger to humans and every other species from declining biodiversity and ecosystem disruption is immense. Follow this link to get an idea of the broader context for the problem with air pollution and health.

The Human Ecological Predicament: Wages of Self-Delusion | MAHB

The Human Ecological Predicament: Wages of Self-Delusion | MAHB | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
"The problem is that what is politically feasible is often ecologically irrelevant. Effective sustainability policy must be consistent with available scientific evidence; ‘alternative facts’ are mere self-delusion. Failure to implement a global sustainability plan that addresses excess consumption and over-population while ensuring greater social equity may well be fatal to the human prospect. Indeed, adherence…
Garry Rogers's insight:
Here’s a thoughtful article about the absolute necessity to reject the global “growth at all costs” philosophy that dominates our businesses, governments, and churches. Because we have failed choose our actions objectively, we are approaching major “tipping points” where choices will slip away. We might still avoid the crash by learning to use basic reasoning. Our children (and adults) should learn to recognize the many forms of faulty reasoning, the fallacies, that obscure truth. We must all learn the value of skepticism and we must learn to ask how (will we get Mexico to pay for the wall) and why (do we need a wall), and we must learn to insist on verifiable facts offered as proof.

Anthropogenic noise pollution is threatening wild spaces

Anthropogenic noise pollution is threatening wild spaces | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
Rachel Buxton, lead author of the study, said: "The noise levels we found can be harmful to visitor experiences in these areas, and can be harmful to human health, and to wildlife. However, we were also encouraged to see that many large wilderness areas have sound levels that are close to natural levels. Protecting these…
Garry Rogers's insight:
Earth's wildlife decline is caused by construction, invasive species, climate change, and many other human impacts. For instance, scientists have shown that the sounds coming from our industry, airplanes, cars, and even our voices are harmful. The story below reports the results of a new study of the effects of sound on wildlife.

Worrisome first quarter of 2017 climate trends – Yale Climate Connections | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
"All in all, it’s only one-fourth of the full 2017 calendar, and experts will emphasize that a single year’s breaking – or not breaking – previous records matters a whole lot less than longer-term trends. But for those advocates hoping for the symbolic “Another Record Year” gotcha headline or soundbite, early indications are that they…

Merkley, Sanders goal: U.S. on all renewables by 2050

Merkley, Sanders goal: U.S. on all renewables by 2050 | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
This bill won't pass Congress immediately--the fossil fuel industry will see to that--but it will change the debate in fundamental ways,” said Bill McKibben, 350.org co-founder.
Garry Rogers's insight:
The U. S. has begun adopting renewable energy. For instance, the number of us solar jobs (not even counting wind) surpassed coal, oil, and gas jobs officially in late 2015 (https://www.bloomberg.com). This story shows some of the powerful support behind the 100 by '50 Act (100% by 2050). It also includes links to background information as well as the bill and the bill summary.

Ocean Farmers Make “Climate March by Sea” | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
"We fishermen are the citizen scientists reporting that water temperatures are going up, species are moving north, the weather is becoming more extreme. We can see it with our own eyes. We’re way beyond the idea of climate denial.”
Garry Rogers's insight:
The fact is, "jobs" are a false goal. Losing fishing jobs to climate change isn't what's important. Preserving marine ecosystems is what's important. We should march in opposition to fossil-fuel production of climate-changing CO2 because it is harming marine ecosystems.

Trump’s Climate Cuts Will Add Millions of Extra Tons of CO2 to the Air

Trump’s Climate Cuts Will Add Millions of Extra Tons of CO2 to the Air | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
David Bookbinder, projects the U.S. will miss its Paris goal by 1 billion metric tons if Trump succeeds in undoing most of the Obama-era climate rules. (The Climate Advisers projection is about 500 million to 700 million metric tons short of the Paris target, depending on the number of rules repealed.)
Garry Rogers's insight:
Even if the next U. S. president reverses Trump's policies, there will still be a large quantity of extra greenhouse-gas emissions. Moreover, simple reversal will not meet our commitments under the Paris treaty; we had much left to do when Obama left office. The effect of our leadership failure on emissions by other countries is hard to calculate. Will our bad example will inspire the others to excel?

Responding to the Conservative War on Nature | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
In the battle to save nature, we are facing civilization-wide beliefs. For peaceful solutions to work, more people must participate.
Garry Rogers's insight:
iolent acts, no matter the goal, are never an effective long-term solution. They produce anger and violent reaction. No matter how slow and difficult they seem, charity, logic, and peaceful demonstration are the sure paths to lasting solutions. If peaceful acts appear ineffective, it is simply because THEY ARE TOO FEW AND TOO SMALL. In the battle to save nature, we are facing civilization-wide beliefs. For peaceful solutions to work, more people must participate. So make a sign about the issue that concerns you most and take part in all your local rallies, marches, sit-ins, and die-ins.

Zinke Releases National Monument Hit List | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
Americans everywhere should be outraged by this assault on our public lands. Once stripped of protections, there’s no telling what the oil and gas industry will do to them.
Garry Rogers's insight:
The anti-nature Trump administration guided by our corrupt congress, has launched yet another attempt to enrich the fossil-fuel industry. This attempt is aimed at the nation's national monuments. And for what? We do not need the fuels. Industry administrators are simply too lazy to switch their focus to renewable energy. So, now we have to cite both sloth and greed as the human forces behind the "death-to-nature" actions of the Trumpeters.

Call For Population Papers: Spring 2018

Call For Population Papers: Spring 2018 | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
Only the narrow "growth-at-all-costs" philosophy of corporations (including cities and towns) in Arizona and the U. S. can explain the continued disregard for the effect of the human population on nature. Here are a few more thoughts on the consequences of continued population growth.
Garry Rogers's insight:
“Overpopulation has become the ‘third rail’ of contemporary environmentalism: no major organization wants to touch the issue anymore. While it had been one of the driving concerns of early environmentalism up until the 1970s, exemplified by such seminal texts as Fairfield Osborn’s Our Plundered Planet (1948), Paul Ehrlich’s The Population Bomb (1968), and the Club of Rome’s The Limits of Growth (1972), concern with population control has since dropped off the list of popular environmentalist causes

It’s the end of the world and we know it: Scientists in many disciplines see apocalypse, soon | GarryRogers Biosphere News | Scoop.it
The late microbiologist Frank Fenner, for example, whose virological work helped eliminate smallpox, predicted in 2010 that “humans will probably be extinct within 100 years, because of overpopulation, environmental destruction, and climate change.”
Garry Rogers's insight:
Here's an article that I hope at least my friends and family read. If it doesn't worry and motivate you, then you are a victim of "willful blindness" a cognitive condition that can be either conscious or subconscious. You can recover from the subconscious condition, but it's usually after you've fallen in a hole and wonder "why didn't I see this coming." However, you can make a conscious effort to reassess your beliefs and act to avoid the hole. And I assume that this is what's going to happen as demonstrations like the massive climate march that just filled Pennsylvania Avenue continue to grow.
