Interesting developments in the China vs. EU trade battle. Watch this space closely as an excellent case study example of how tarriffs can lead to retaliation and then how, according to those in favour of trade liberalisation, economic growth globally can be negatively effected.

Microlives: the key to living longer and more healthily? | Economics News and Views | Scoop.it
A new book suggests a radical new way of assessing the health risks and benefits of everything from smoking to jogging. How does it work?
Mr Threlfall's insight:

Time units or Microlives! Paying for demerit goods in time. (Interesting opp cost analysis)

Sam Dolton's comment, September 7, 2013 2:44 AM
Microlives, I'm liking this unit of time. I don't think it's quite as radical as they make it out to be though. By moving the monetary value given to costs, to this unit of lives, we're only narrowing our focus. As it only focuses on one aspect of a shadow price, it's also incomparable with other costs. How do you compare the health implications of smoking, with the negative effects of funding child labour in Malawi's tobacco plantations? Although using shadow prices was always subjective and intricately difficult, it at least was comparable. The issue in my mind is costs that have no effects on life span, merely life quality.

It's strange that we would blame China for such subsidies while the EU is engaging in agricultural subsidies with the CAP, of great magnitude.
