Things that make you go hmmmm……..

Things that make you go hmmmm…….. | Economics, Investments & Money Management | Scoop.it

We have often written about the issues surrounding listening to the market and the noise that comes from many regarding buys and sells. So I was somewhat unsurprised to read a recent article in the Wall Street Journal that provided some insights into the minds of the analysts that make the recommendations on buys and sells.

The hidden truth about the taxing of your super fund in retirement.

When the Government announced proposed changes to superannuation last month, the headlines talked about taxing of funds with balances above $2m, however the devil was in the detail as my colleague, Michael van Schaik explains in this clip.

40,000 Reasons to avoid Hedge Funds

40,000 Reasons to avoid Hedge Funds | Economics, Investments & Money Management | Scoop.it

Hedge funds were all the rage as the world emerged from the Tech wreck in the early 2000′s and as the market strated to move upwards people invested in them in droves (including yours truly).

P2P Consultants's curator insight, April 21, 8:14 PM

Interesting title: One comment is so true: “Since hedge funds are now a dominant force in the market, they can’t, as a group, outperform the market,” he said. “Outperforming the market with low volatility on a consistent basis is an impossibility. I outperformed the market for 30-odd years, but not with low volatility.” Consumer lending in the US has a 26 year track record of 10%+ with no volatility and consistent returns. P2p lending is an attractive asset class. Interesting, many hedge funds are now entering this asset class to capture its risk adjusted return profile.

A Random Walk Across Europe

With the news in the lead up to Easter focusing heavily on the problems in Cyprus with their banking system on the verge of a collapse  it again provided the press with ample fodder to write about the next crisis that was going to doom us all.

Coming into Focus | Economics, Investments & Money Management | Scoop.it

Today’s post has been some time coming. I started writing this around April last year, or more appropriately  I saw the cartoon 12 months ago, and for one reason or another it slipped down the list. However on stumbling across it again, I realized that whilst simple it gives a very powerful message.

A Kodak Moment | Economics, Investments & Money Management | Scoop.it

In news out a month or so ago, Kodak exited chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. after selling off almost 1,000 of the patents it have accumulated over the past 100 plus years as a company. Whilst Kodak hasn’t disappeared completely there is a long list of well known global companies that have fallen by the Wayside.

I read with some amusement this past week that ANZ had revised its forecast of interest rates cuts here in Australia for 2013. Originally their economists had ‘predicted’ that there would be 100 basis points slashed off rates during the year.

I had a dream my life would be…….So different from this hell I’m living………So different now from what it seemed………Now life has killed the dream I dreamed. With this song storming up the charts on the back of the Les Miserables movie its getting a bit of airtime and as I was listening to it the other day the final verse of the song got me thinking about what dreams we have.

Risk and Return

Risk and Return | Economics, Investments & Money Management | Scoop.it

Another month, another 25 points and Term Deposit rates continue to go down.

P2P Consultants's curator insight, April 22, 8:14 AM

This article discusses the trade off between risk/reward. Nothing really new here. Author claims. That is, as you try to achieve every higher rates of return, the risk you take increases at a much faster rate. What about p2p lending. The interest rate risk in consumer lending is almost nil. Over the past 30 years cash yields on most investments have declined while interest rates on consumer loans and credit cards have remained almost unchanged. The main risk in consumer lending are default rates which are linked to the level of un-employment. So in 2007/2008 you did see higher default rates but the spreads were still attractive, making it one few asset classes relatively unaffected. There is no market volatility in consumer lending/p2p lending, so where all asset classes were significantly impacted by the recent financial disaster, consumer lending was not. The conclusion is the consumer lending has one of the best risks/reward trade offs of any asset class, a secret most banks will not tell you. However, a caution is that like banks you need to have an adequate amount of diversification in your loan portfolio.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2013, I’m not sure we were going to make there for a while, I know that in the lead up to New Year’s I was terrified that I was going to fall off a cliff. Miraculously though, right at the last minute the cliff turned out to be nothing more than a small ditch although, after momentarily dipping into it and then emerging on the other side, I was quickly told that a much bigger cliff awaits me a few months down the road.
