The prisoner's dilemma is a classic game theory thought experiment. But no one ever tested this on actual prisoners.
Atin Basu's insight:

prisoners have to be together longer than regular students so the threat of future punishment for non cooperation is stronger for prisoners than for students. This larger threat of punishment for non cooperation makes prisoners cooperate more than students.
