15 Ways You're Wasting Time and Don't Even Know It

15 Ways You're Wasting Time and Don't Even Know It | Economic Development | Scoop.it
Wasting time can be a great thing. Taking breaks and indulging in distractions gives your body and brain a chance to refresh and actually increases your output over the long haul. Study after study proves this.

The problem isn't when you decide to kick back. The problem is when you waste time without even realizing that's what you're doing. Spinning your wheels--engaging in pointless activities that don't help you move your company or your life forward--eats through your mental resources, frustrates your need for accomplishment, and is generally a short and sure route to burnout.

So what are these insidious activities that feel potentially important but are actually pretty worthless? The Web offers plenty of thoughtful suggestions, from the false productivity hack (that actually costs you time) to various forms of vanity and emotional drama that simply sap your energy. Here's a roundup.

10 Business Development Techniques to Grow Sales Fast

10 Business Development Techniques to Grow Sales Fast | Economic Development | Scoop.it

For a little guidance, I give you 10 lessons from John Whitehead, the fabulously successful former chairman of Goldman Sachs. Besides climbing to the top of the corporate ladder and making billions for his firm, Whitehead stormed the beach at Normandy on D-Day. We should memorize his pearls of wisdom:

1. Don't waste your time going after business you don't really want.

We hired a mechanical engineer from West Point this month to help us grow sales. His focus is to help manufacturing engineers in industrial S&P 500 companies understand why Marlin Steel, my company, is better than our competitors. Why? Our clients are not marketing companies, nor are they point of purchase display companies. These folks don't appreciate quality and engineering. Instead, they are looking for the lowest price. Make sure you point your sales and marketing team in the right direction for profitable business.

Are you letting data drive your decisions?

Are you letting data drive your decisions? | Economic Development | Scoop.it

Specifically, data changes the nature of decision-making. Historically, decisions were made by the most senior person on the project. The highest paid person in the room decided what to do. Good senior managers listened carefully to the opinions and arguments of others and then declared how to proceed. The problem with this structure is that it creates a culture of advocacy rather than a culture of evidence. In organizations driven by the opinions of the senior management, people get rewarded for convincing the senior management to implement their ideas. Data analysis is used to support the arguments. Data-driven organizations behave differently. The role of managers is to decide what to test. The data analysis determines what to do.

Average Joe entrepreneurship & the 'sharing economy' - Al Jazeera America

Average Joe entrepreneurship & the 'sharing economy' - Al Jazeera America | Economic Development | Scoop.it

Chances are, you have stuff you don’t always use that others would pay to rent:  A lawnmower, extra car or even an expensive purse.  America’s “sharing economy”, born out of the economic crisis in 2007, exploded into a $26B/yr industry but not without its critics. Taxi cab & hotel groups say they’re being robbed of business by people operating illegally…some even arguing it will drive costs up.
